And of cause right after I bought the vase I come across another one at Lauritz.com, estimated at >1000 kroner ($150). So perhaps the price I paid wasn't as favorable as I thought.
Or the one at Lauritz.com was actually underprized? A square vase of similar size sold for € 1,657.50 at rm-auctions.com
Hi Corey,
I know you said you didn’t have time to post a photo of the vase you bought, but doesn’t it take just as long to post a photo of the actual vase as it does to find and post links to two similar vases?
Nic
Corey
You should welcome criticism, even if it is incorrect. It wont hurt your vase or it's value. The link you posted of the first vase, was 68 cm in height which is enormous and must be modern replica and in fact it states it is 20 years old I think. There was only 1 bidder, so it went cheap and the postage may be the reason for the lack of interest in a heavy oversized modern replica. I think it was designed to look old, because it was hand painted and in some places looks like a genuine piece.
i agree with Dong, it seems a modern copy from the bottom, the color ..
I would agree that the vase posted from Lauritz.com is modern. As for the actual vase just acquired by Cory - when he finds time to photograph and post images then ......
Stuart
The description from Lauritz.com says that the vase is 20th. century, not that its 2o years old. The opening bid is likely a shill bid the people from the auction has put there themselves. It has been documented several times during the past 15 years that Lauritz use shill bidding extensively and especially the Odense department has been scandalized on several occasions. In Denmark people knows this and that might be the reason of the lack of interest. Plus of course if the vase at Lauriz is modern. And that should cheer me up because the my vase which seems old must be a good buy after all.
The vase I just bought have the same black dots all over like the vase at Lauritz.com but look genuinely old. For example much of the gilding on the rim is worn away. All the examples of similar vases I could find online has bright green color on them that my vase is lacking, so I was wondering if the color has faded.
There is a couple more vases dated to the 20th century and estimted at less than 100 kroner and this time in the main department.

And even a Qianlong period plate at 1200 kroner. Sadly no pics of the back.

I just noted the two tang horses we talked about months ago are still available even though they the had been"sold" for 88,000 kroner in a previous listing. Interesting.

Dear Corey,
that vase from Lauritz is horrible, to be frank, it is not worth more than that; be sure that I would not buy it even for much less.
The reason is that it is not “something”, it is a “trying to look at”, and a bad attempt to that.
I really hope that your vase is not of the same category. But please dear Corey, if you are surprised in seeing that that vase is so cheap, it would be much better to stop buy, because you are risking to throw out a lot of money.
I will not repeat enough that it is useless, useless, useless, totally useless to pay attention to the tone of a color, the wear, etc, if one is not in conditions to recognize the style. The painting style is what tells the period of a piece, not details like black spots, the wear of the gilding, etc. Even more by pictures.
Giovanni
No worries, Giovanni. I'll bring the vase to Bruun Rasmussen as I said. Or use Peters new identification service should choose to list it on eBay. I tried to take pictures through the window but it didn't work and now when I have all ready bought the vase there isn't really any need for showing it here.
Hi Corey, I'd love to see what you have too either way. I love famille verte porcelains.
I'm new to Chinese ceramics and it's helpful to learn from both authentic and contemporary replica pieces. Personally, I find it equally as helpful to learn about the characteristics of both honestly.
Ultimately though I had to adjust my mindset when assessing pieces. Initially I would inspect and critique an item trying to find everything right with it, looking for clues of authenticity. Once I adjusted my mindset to assume every Chinese porcelain I came into contact with (outside of a reputable dealer) was trying to trick me I was able to drastically reduce the number of contemporary pieces I picked up. I started looking for clues to prove they were fakes from the get-go rather than clues the item was authentic. Hopefully this is a tip that can help other inexperienced buyers like me.
If I'm on the fence on something I will frequently take a stab at an item under a certain dollar amount assuming it's a learning experience. Sounds like it's what you did here.
Miglarry just sold 2 plates similar to the plate you posted Corey.
Here is one for sale at £29.99 with a hairline.
That's great. Lets hope the winner of the plate at Lauritz uses his right of cancellation and doesn't overpay it.
But if I may just go back to the vase at Lauritz. I'm not convinced that it's modern. You can see how the base is similar to the one sold at Rob Michels Auctions. (That one is 58 cm in height while the one at Lauritz is 58 so the difference is only 4 cm btw.)
And then compare with the base of another similar vase at Lauritz dated to the 20th/21st century.
https://www.lauritz.com/da/auktion/firsidet-kinesisk-vase-af-porcelaen-1900-2000-tallet/i4627994/
Also you can not rely on the fact that the first vase was actually sold for 300 kroner. 15 years ago a law was introduced in denmark that gives the buyer the rightto cancelation of purchases via online auctions within 14 days and people uses the to sabotage the sales.
Here is an example of yet another similar shaped vase also dated to the 20th century and listed 5 times with hammer prices ranging from 300 - 180,000 kroner against a 1000 kroner estimate.

Pictures of bases attached below.
A real 19th century vase of similar shape for comparison (I guess). Unfortunately with no pictures of the base.
And of course I forgot to attach the picture of the base of the vase from Rob Michels.
