Authenticated by Kotalla labs. They are actually rather impressive. Very well modelled and could probably fetch more than the given estimate if one could get sell them in the top of the market. Could perhaps even be Qi dynasty.

In chinese tang pottery i have a long experience.
Chinese pottery figures are very difficult to expertize. Now there are a lot of pieces in the market made of part of pieces of different figures. Some of them are authentic pieces restaured but many other are recreations made of parts of other antiques pieces.
How do you know if Tang pottery piece is new or is old?. Tl test is a good begining but its not enough.
After TL tes you have to do an Xray or CTscan. If you know to observe the xray or ctscan you can see if the piece is really one piece or is made of different old parts. If its made of different parts you have to observe. You have to look at how the breaks are, if they are linear bad but better if they are curved and natural. This is the different between one restaured and one recreation. I have done many x ray of tang figures and there many recreations
About this horse, i dont like the mane because seems remodeled, i dont like the painting it seems to be repainted. The tail is too standard. I think, at least it has a masive restauration. This dont mean that the TL tes is bad, this mean TL is not enough, i think
By other side to get one pair really intact in this condition a lot of money, more than 100.000

Over all there is something not quite right in Tobruk.
If my memory serves me correct, it was Xin who in a recent post stated that there was a small village within China that was producing ancient pottery that even fooled experts at museums etc.
Personally I would not buy this item. The above reply is absolutely correct with the issue of xray with pottery and additionally porcelains I might add.

I like more CT-scan , because you get 10.000 + single shot position to check interesting parts
of an object. Surface and painting are outside scans and can going complecated .
Example from an african art head to see how you can move through it and stop on every place you like !
I prefer Ct-scan !! 10 000 + more detailed information !! To read Xray or Ct-scan needs experinece and
knowledge of trandional workmenship technics. The condition of the objects in the thombs are mostly not accepted for collectors +++ Think of this part and be careful to looking for perfect objects !!

Thanks for the replies. First: I hadn't realized that the auction would end so soon when I posted the link. The final bid was 38,000 kroner when it ended last night and then with the premiums it would be around 45,000 kroner, which would be a nice price for a pair of tang horses of this size and quality if they are not extensively restored or even remodelled as it has been suggested here. But now the auction has just started all over and the price ís already up at 58,000. So yes! Something is not quite right here. Lauritz.com use shill bidding a lot. It has been demonstrated several times by various people including journalists. It was actually the reason why a law was passed that gave the costumers a 14 days chance to cancel purchases from online auctions in Denmark back 15 years ago. Apparently things haven't really improved since then. And there has also been countless examples of fraudulant activities with this auction. Yesteday nignt when the auction ended I was actually out with this London girl who have done well with her investments and she offered to buy the horses, but I think it's probably better to stay away.
