Pierre Le-Tan Auction of His Asian Art Collection
The Pierre Le-Tan auction, Paris at Sotheby's in March 2021
This Paris sale is worth paying attention to if you buy and collect Asian works of art, as well as Islamic art. Why you might ask? It's all great stuff any good collector would enjoy having. Further, it's all material selected by the legendary illustrator Pierre Le-Tan who first began collecting at the age of 7 and continued for his entire life. His father also had a deep interest in art and antiques, the two spent days together hunting around Paris and the French countryside.
Pierre Le-Tan, you may not know his name, but you likely know his art.
Pierre LeTan spent his commercial art career, starting at the age of 17 and worked for forty years, as an illustrator for a wide range of great 20th C.. By the age of 19 he had two New Yorker covers published. no small feat, but a hint of what was to come in this artists career. His works were published in a wide range of periodicals, including "The New Yorker", "Vogue", "Tatler Magazine" and many more. He also provided the artwork for Europes finest fashion firms including Gucci and Lanvin.
Pierre Le-Tan passed away on September 17, 2019 and is survived by his wife.
Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Islamic Art, the auction.
The collection of Pierre LeTan being auctioned is not a collection of exorbitantly valued items beyond the grasp of 99.5% of the collecting community, quite the opposite actually. The sale presents an interesting opportunity for very keen collectors with a good eye and broad appreciation to take a shot at some terrific affordable objects. Even more encouraging are the VERY modest estimates and by default rock bottom "Reserves" on the Le-Tan collection.
The auction has two parts, one online only and the other also online but with limited live audience participation by ticket only. All items can of course be viewed by appointment and Sotheby's welcomes all inquiries for additional information. So, have at it.
Remember: RESERVES CANNOT BE GREATER THAN THE LOWEST ESTIMATE!
