@avatar Thanks for sharing these avatar, they’re lovely pieces and similar types of objects, however on close inspection their style of carving and treatment of subject matter is quite different I would argue?

I’ve just read an essay discussing the recorded objects placed by Empress Cixi in her mausoleum before her death and found a curious entry:

It’s certainly an interesting possibility?

Red tourmaline and pink tourmaline are very different in gem stone quality. But the read was interesting.

 @lotusblack Thanks for the Links Brian, the lots in that auction were incredible!

Btw I’ve managed to locate a jewellers loupe to Jerry rig a closeup photo of the area you were concerned about because the line cut into the stone appeared jagged, here’s a side by side comparison of the same area (I’ve taken my photo from the side so that the groove can be seen clearly)-

Hi all,

I just want to apologise if I’ve come across as abrasive in this thread- that certainly wasn’t my intention. I think I may have been wrong to post this piece here as this forum is mostly geared towards Chinese porcelain.

If there are more appropriate places for me to post this piece of jewellery I would love to know so please feel free to post any suggestions.

Thanks for all of your comments so far.

T

@tony-brams

Hi Tony,

Did you hear back from the appraiser? I'm curious to know what was found out. I know very little about jewelry stones.

I've learned to take the opinions here with a grain of salt. I know I and most are here to learn.

Good luck!

SW

@steve I’ve spoken to multiple auction houses but because this piece lacks any provenance whatsoever and has no auction history they’re reluctant to simply take the piece at face value and attribute it as being made in an imperial workshop, which I understand, as Chinese fakes have become increasingly sophisticated in the 21st century.

There is an agreed opinion that it likely falls within the late Qing period.

I’m a relatively objective person and this piece appears completely genuine to me when viewed in person, and I don’t think it’s completely outrageous to believe it may have even been owned by the Empress Dowager Cixi herself.

But then again maybe not? Who knows.

@tony-brams I don't think you have been abrasive and I am glad you chose to post it hear. We all benefit from learning about objects that aren't in our wheelhouse. I feel I'm a little smarter for having followed this thread. And now I'll be on the lookout a bit more for similar objects that I otherwise might gave looked past. John

@johnshoe Thanks John, I’m glad you don’t think I’m an insufferable contrarian.

To be perfectly honest this whole episode has been quite disheartening for me- like many of you I’ve always hoped to come across a genuine piece of treasure that’s been overlooked, a ‘sleeper’ I believe they’re referred to in the trade.

But I now know that even if I walked into Christie’s with the genuine Arc of the Covenant they most likely wouldn’t give me the time of day because I’m a nobody and the object has no provenance nor auction history.

I know this sounds a little tin foil hat nuts but there’s definitely a grain of truth to it.

@tony-brams

Thank you.

Have you considered asking Peter?

I know that Empress Dowager Xixi revived the production of imperial luxury goods to use at court, as diplomatic gifts, and to supply a hungry market for such items. So while it's probably unlikely she personally owned it it would have been the result of her policies (if it's indeed late Qing).

And I agree with John: I learned a few things from this thread so I appreciate you posting it.

And don't be discouraged by Christies. They're just that way. Enjoy your piece and keep searching for its identity!

This is all part of the process of learning. I am not offended by members being defensive but if there is name calling probably. I have spent about an hour or two researching your pendant and I am still of the same opinion. The carving is just not the quality I expected from Imperial workshop. It looks like it was rushed stiff sharp edges it just looks manufactured to me. That is only an opinion on what I can see. The pictures the angles lighting it is really different from how you see it and how I’m viewing it. But to me it’s missing the flow. But it doesn’t mean much at the end because if you like it that’s all that matters. I sell a lot of items things I am 100 percent sure of I just keep at that I believe it what my gut tells me. Christie’s unless the emperor himself signed a note you’re going to have problems they get a 1000 enquirers a day they are just to busy for an unknown collector. Now for the being wrong about something I’m wrong daily in one way or another it’s also part of the process.
