Hope you are well. It's been an anxious week with our captain in the hospital, hasn't it? I hope Peter is on the mend and as good as new soon!
My latest blue and white export purchase (from a small dealer in Orlando) is this "Nanking" pattern bowl just over a foot (30 cm) long and 5.5" high in the middle. I think this as an example that's modeled after a European silver service. The glaze seems a little thin, the spear pattern especially tiny and meticulous, the body has a mould seam at either end, there is a firing flaw on the inside bottom (a small fissure), and parts of it (like the underside) have that "orange skin." The rim has some tiny flaws but overall there are no chips, cracks, or repairs. I was relieved it made it here in one piece as the box was dented in on one side.
I was wondering if you'd seen something like it. When I first pulled it out of the box I was worried it was fake but now think it's quite authentic, especially upon examination in daylight. If you think otherwise please chime in.
Anyway, I'm pleased with this purchase and happy with the price (around $250). It will be used this Thanksgiving!

Looks like a nice 18th century export piece to me. And not a to shabby price if condition is good. I think the body and white is Nanking but painted in Canton.

Thank you. I remember reading that the blue and white export wares were made and fired at Jingdezhen but the colorful enamels were then added and fired again at Canton. The blue is underglaze, isn't it? So if it had been painted at Canton then it would have been glazed for the first time on biscuit from Jingdezhen. Hmm. Back to the books!

P. S. Too late to edit, looked in English Style and Decoration by Stafford Cliff, neoclassicism popular at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th.
@steve The book does not discuss Chinese Export but I'm sure they copied the popular styles for the English and American markets. The book printed for Thames & Hudson, the author blurb says "design and art director based in London. Formerly creative director of the Conran Design Group." It is a good book on the various periods of English design.
Ah, it's a book! For some reason I read your earlier post thinking he was a Neoclassical silversmith. (I think I need to enlarge the font on my browser or get new glasses or something...)
Apologies for the confusion.
As you know, for the last couple of years I've been browsing b&w export items and haven't seen this shape and size before. When I first saw the photo and price I thought it wasn't bad for a gravy boat but then I read the dimensions!
Murphy's Law says I will now see this type of bowl everywhere...
It's very sculptural, isn't it? Reminds me of a Baroque fountain basin.
@steve Did you see the one of the same shape but only a floral decoration from the North Carolina antique shop, 600 and have listed as compote centerpiece late 19th century, that is the only one I can find in that shape. That one they must be thinking a revival, listed as pre-1900 also, so maybe they are not sure of the date.
I just Googled Chinese Export porcelain Compote and it came up for a Susquahana Antique company founded 1913 in Fairview, North Carolina, same shape but with a floral decoration.

I agree, I don't think it's late 19th/early 20th c. but earlier. This is the exact shape/body. Probably made around the same time.
