I'm a new member, however, I've been collecting for 50 years. Is it possible to see some of the collections of other members?
My personal interest is Chinese and Japanese porcelain. I'm retired in Atlanta and formerly lived in Japan, The Philippines and Belgium mostly in the 70s.
David
Since many of us collect a lot of stuff, perhaps you could suggest something very specific you would like to see, then it could be more focused to help people with choosing what item(s) to post pictures of. For example, we could do a post on foo lions, or Chinese armorial pieces, or Kangxi blue and white, Meiji cloisonne, etc. John
I was just thinking the same thing, John...
take it with a grain of salt
@musicnus Welcome!
I've never heard of a collector publicly posting their entire collection... I think collectors are more private about their treasures to do that.
If there are specific items that you'd like to share (show and tell) ...please do on the 'share your favorite items' section.
If you have questions about any of your items age, quality, and the such...this is the place to post.
Are you still acquiring, or are you downsizing?
I'll be up in Atlanta for Scott's this week (B6 space 352 I think) ... I'll be bringing a few odd and end Chinese and Japanese pieces (nothing too special off the top of my head) ...probably a few collector's quality Japanese pieces if you're looking to buy.
If you're looking to sell, I'd like to come see your collection... I buy individual pieces and entire collections, but I don't appraise what I buy (reach out to Peter Combs if you need valuations).
Tim Green
At one point I had ALL my Chinese and Japanese Porcelain on angelfire.com - They changed policies and now all my photos are gone -----all 232 of them 🙁
I wonder if there are websites to host pictures of our collections.
@musicnus Giovanni @clayandbrush shared some of his collection recently, if you use the Members look up, his more recent post should still have the link to his lovely catalogued collection.
Thank you dear Sharon and William for linking my site.
Dear Tim, as for publicly posting our own collections, it depends. In general, valuable collections are not shared, but it is not always true.
I decided to publish my own collection as a guide for genuine pieces, regardless rarity or importance. There are both rare and common items. It is a guide to genuine items of many types, to which beginners can reliably refer to. By looking at any item, the beginner has not to wonder if it is genuine or not, as it happens when he is looking at items offered on eBay, Catawiki, and so on. A safe place, where some description may not be very precise, some error can occur, but I am revising it constantly and making corrections when necessary.
Dear David, welcome here. If you are looking for a place where to publish the collection, there are many options, including free ones on Google.
I decided to publish it on a paid domain, for matter of avoiding future changes in policies, as it happened to you.
Regards,
Giovanni
Giovanni,
I was very happy to see your site yesterday. I was greatly impressed by the scope and quality of your pieces!
I will take our advice and look into publishing by collection as again. Even tho it would not stand up to yours, especially since I have recently sold many of my best Chinese pieces to a local Chinese collector - who had seen my collection on Angelfire!. I am getting older and unfortunately my daughter shows little interest in my little hobby! 🙂
Dear David,
It is exactly my problem. Nobody in my family seems interested on these things, and I too am not so young.
Don’t know exactly what will happen to the collection.
Giovanni
Giovanni,
I think our common problem should be brought to light on the forums. Perhaps, other members have ideas that would help us to make this coming decision. Some may already are doing something.
There are no estate sales here and I have no heirs. If I do nothing my collection will be cleared out by a household clearer and end on Ebay or on a local charity flea market. I’ll probably auction it off in my lifetime and buy a single expensive piece instead.
Birgit
@shinigami Birgit I will volunteer to be your heir for that single expensive piece!

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink.
