@shinigami Yikes! That's terrible. They have to list the shipping cost up front, though, don't they? (Unlike at LiveAuctioneers.) I could see how someone might overlook it. I hate the feeling of being gauged.
From my understanding of both Liveauctioneers and invaluable One cannot bid unless they have first registered and been accepted by the auction house.
You do not need to register your credit card with either the auction house or live site. Its optional.
Since they have admitted that you were outbid. Their reasoning doesn't make sense. I suspect maybe a dummy bid.
Mark
Hi Mark,
Do you think they may have used a dummy bidder to increase the cost to me but made a mistake and bid $1 too much? That would explain why the higher bid was "rejected" because the person didn't have a credit card on file.
I told them I am reaching out to LiveAuctioneers and my bank about this situation.
Steve
They cannot accept any bids without prior acceptance to bid regardless of whether a card is on file or not.
I often bid via Invaluable without providing my credit card.
I suspect that either the auction house placed a dummy bid or a registered bidder did and withdraw or cancelled the bid during the live auction.
Regardless, you were the underbidder and not successful in the bidding process... you were outbid!!
If the bidder pulled their bid live then it should have been put up again... I see this a lot.
Mark
@steve I don’t think it was your fault. I rarely see any shipping rates on auction websites. They always say „contact us about shipping“. Many auction houses I bought from had decent shipping rates so I usually just bid without asking but after having been ripped off by Bonhams I have started to ask in advance. The ones that use external shippers are more expensive than the ones doing it themselves. But in your case, especially as he doesn’t allow pickup it seems more like a dubious business concept.
Birgit
Update: they sent me a reply to my many emails I sent yesterday asking me to summarize my questions in one email. I was firm that I did not win the item and that I wasn't paying for it.
I'm thinking of reaching out to the CA Attorney General's office about this, especially if they press it any more.
This kind of thing gets my blood pumping. I don't like giving into predatory practices!
Well, I ended up paying the invoice after they said they'd turn it over to a collection agency. They also said they would have my Liveauctioneers account cancelled.
It may be too late, and this may cost me more than the original bill. I am hoping not.
I
In the end, I paid the bill in full and they are shipping the item.
Lesson learned: ALWAYS ask about cost of shipping if it's in-house unless you know them.
Not sure about them having your Liveauctioneers account cancelled. I know they can report you as a non payment and refuse to allow you to participate in their future auctions.
Not sure but I think its three strikes against you and your account is suspended or cancelled. But other members would have to confirm this etc etc
I would still contact Liveauctioneers and report them.
Lesson learnt my friend. Always ask before bidding about pick-up and or shipping costs.
I just read some of their reviews... shocking.
However, before you proceed i would still tell them that you will leave a bad review and contact Liveauctioneers about their conduct. I see a few people have had free shipping after reversing their negative post's.
Mark
Thanks, Mark.
I have an email prepared to send to Live Auctioneers with narrative and will send this to them after item is dispatched (although at this point I don't care if I receive it or not!)
They did email me asking if I were planning on posting a negative review. It's an awkward thing to ask. I told them I wasn't planning on it and asked them if they were considering giving me the $30 discount they promised before things got heated. No reply.
I agree, I also saw they asked other buyers about negative reviews and some got refunded. Maybe leave a negative review on Peter's list as well? And tell them you intend to.
I hope Peter sees this and warns his viewers to take care. I have never bid via Live Auctioneers and I won't now, too easy to end up out of pocket. I know we should read small print but things like "expensive inhouse shipping only" should be clearly flagged.
@steve I read their reviews and in my opinion he is a scallawag and perpetrates sharp practices, by all means do the service of informing everyone. When I read the review wherein it stated he had contacted the guy's wife with threatening messages of defamation, I laughed out loud. Free legal advice to him, "the truth is a complete defense to defamation." I am sorry that you inadvertantly became involved with the rascal or keeping it simply Southern, "a low down."
I asked this auction house about a bronze tsuba in their upcoming auction.
He quoted me $145usd to post it by FedEx only!
Ridiculous costing..
Mark
Yup. Doesn't matter what he's shipping, it's gouging.
When I told him I might still write a negative review and that I am contacting the BBB he replied:
