Hi Everyone,
I just thought I'd run by you a situation that just happened at Live Auctioneers and see if you had any advice.
I received notice that I was outbid on an item (I only bid $18 and it went to $19). Then later I was notified that I won and that the shipping from the U.K. was $145.00 which seems very steep to me. (The item is a glass figurine 9" tall).
I don't want to violate auction rules but I replied that at this point I'd rather pay the cost plus premium and have them keep the item.
Obviously it's an amateur mistake on my part. I'm assuming I have no recourse and must pay the full bill.
Any thoughts?

Tell the auction house what happened, and that you are willing to pay. See if they will write it off. It's just 18 dollars either way.
@rahawkins Thank you. I did tell them that I'd rather pay the $24 bucks and not get the item. I am now reading other customer reviews about the outrageous cost of their in house shipping. Hopefully I will be able to resolve this.
Crazy shipping quote.
Pay for the item plus bp but not shipping. Ask them to keep it for their next auction with no reserve. If they say no then tell them to keep it.
Or failing that perhaps someone here is Close by and willing to pick it up for free!
Its a lesson learnt for a small fee..... always ask prior to bidding what the estimate will be for shipping.

Apparently by bidding there is the obligation to pay for shipping. I offered to pay for the item plus commission but have them keep it but they refused. They did offer to lower the shipping cost to $115 but that still is far too high.
Hi Mark, I did offer that but they are refusing, telling me that I'm obligated to have the item shipped.
I just looked, is it Albinus? Apparently they allow no collection! That is shocking and you can't have it sent to anyone in the UK either unless it is already registered with them. I have daughters in Nottingham, maybe one of them could have got it for you.
Maybe something in clause 19 could get you out of it? It says no bids can be retracted, yet they told you that you had been outbid. So if they have accepted the retraction of the winning bid, they have gone against conditions that you were relying upon. So they can't really tell you that you now have to pay as having been outbid they must have accepted a retraction, so why can't you retract, too?
Does that make sense?

That does make sense. They said the bid was placed by someone without a credit card, so the house withdrew the bid. Yes, it's Albinus. I'm writing LiveAuctioneers about the situation.
It's a glass figurine of a creepy clown. I don't like clowns and thought it would make a nice Halloween decoration. Now it's scarier than I first realized! 😆
I see it and yes, it was scary enough at $18, it is positvely terrifying now!
I really don't see how anyone could even have got through to bid on the auction without first registering a card. You were told you were outbid. They aren't disputing it so they should be chasing the person who they allowed to without registering a card. I think you should win this if you argue enough,as long as you pay for the item, it is not worth them chasing an US bidder especially given the further bad publicity they will get from your review.
I see you can have the item send to another address as long as you inform them in writing, although I guess Fed-ex delivery in the UK will still be expensive, but if you need an address let me know.
Hi Julia, Their contract states that they will only ship to the address registered with the bidder, but thank you very much for your kind offer. (I have friends in Carmarthen I could contact for that if I need to.)
I think the fact that I was informed that I had been outbid is my best argument at this point. I am being polite but firm and hopefully they'll let me off the hook.
It seems like quite a racket; they don't seem to be very eager to cultivate return customers!
No, some of the comments were worrying. I am glad you flagged this up as I could imagine buying from them thinking that one of my girls could pop round and get it for me. It wouldn't occur to me that collection wasn't allowed.
