@imperialfinegems

Update: I responded: Yes, I would love to have the transaction cancelled and my account with you suspended.

Response:

"This is to inform you we will be chasing the debt legally following your threats and default of the legally binding contract. Storage charges will have to be accounted for. You have absolutely no legal standing as you confirmed in your last written email that you were happy to proceed "

I responded that I paid the bill in full and that I had no debts.

Steve, this is horrible. I would report them to Trading Standards. They may not be able to do anything but if it is true what the comments say about the company, they won't like it.

@julia I know, right? What a nightmare. I'm sure they're bluffing as I paid yesterday. And all because they don't want me to leave a bad review. How can one conduct business like this and live with oneself?

I looked up the Better Business Bureau but they only handle companies in North America. Is the Trading Standard the agency that handles UK businesses? I'll look into this. Thank you!

Yes, that is the body that deals with rogue traders. Have a look at their reviews regarding their trading activity. It might be useful to add that in as possibly, they have been in trouble before.

Good luck. I am really sorry this has happened to you. It is so unpleasant.

@julia

Thank you, Julia. I appreciate it.

I am trying to submit a complaint form with the NTS but it won't accept my postal code for some reason. I may have to try to call them on Monday.

I searched for them on the NTS site and found nothing.

What a frustrating mess. Thank you for sharing, I will certainly steer clear of them and also be better about requesting information ahead of time myself. Laughable that they're threatening you after payment. Good luck with the rest of your pursuit.  I hope you find a peaceful end.

@happyholiday

Thank you, Brian. Yes, it's a shame that there are dealers like this.

Update: he offered to cancel the order and suspend my account. I said yes. Now he reversed the charges and says they are turning it over to a collection agency and that I will end up owing much more.

@rahawkins My favorite line from Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom, "it's amazing what you can do with a Sears Card." Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead, both terrific character actors from St. Louis' Central High School. Price owned Vincent Price Photography Studios and produced most of the high school graduation photos, including my own. I wonder how many of those woodblocks are floating aroud.

This page may be helpful:

https://www.tradingstandards.uk/consumer-help/#:~:text=You%20can%20access%20their%20range,chat%20service%20on%20their%20website.

I don't understand why they aren't chasing the top bidder. They allowed him to bid, why don't they send the collection agency after him. This doesn’t sound right. Besides, if they give you your money back, why involve a collection agency to get the money back again.

I am so glad you posted this, I feel I have learnt a lesson and I hope lots of our non-member visitors have, too.

In some of their ratings people say the same has happened to them. It seems there are no top bidders, just a kind of shill bidding.

@julia Yes, I think we have all learned a lesson and I thank Steve for sharing. This fellow would have a difficult time pursuing a false debt internationally. Just for grins I looked up the California version of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act, which strikes fear into the hearts of malfeasors (the Texas version provides for treble damages, music to the ears of Texas lawyers practicing commercial law). I think Steve's idea of notifying the office of the Attorney General of California is an excellent one (something for this malfeasor to mull over, as he may become aware that the jig is up, sunshine has hit the scam). I will be interested in the reaction of the company that provided the platform and whether or not they reply to Steve's query.

@sharonp Thanks, Sharon. I think his parting threat was just a "F*** you!"

Funny, he refunded all but $3 of the charge, so if a collection agency comes after me I can say that, in fact, he owes me.

I learned a few things. If a collection agency contacts you, ask them for proof of the debt in writing. Then, once you receive it you have 30 days to dispute. I can imagine any debt collector agency being contacted by this person and explaining how they had been paid but then reversed the charges and now wants them to collect more; sounds like something they would turn down. If it comes to that, I am willing to have my day in court and pay an attorney if I have to.

Since they refunded the money I think it's still worth while alerting the CA AG since they're interested in preventing fraud.

@julia I agree and I think Mark is on to something that it probably was a dummy bidder. I can imagine an unethical seller would use dummy bidders to get the actual bidders up to their highest price.

I'll update when LiveAuctioneers gets back to me. I'm sure I'm not the first complaint they've dealt with about this auction house.
