I think if a collector is a purist, he/she might prefer direct, no-holds-barred feedback, it’s preferable to a very costly mistake! But people collect for all sorts of reasons; some collect what they like, regardless of age, and only want some more info so that they can gauge what they should pay.
I’m a purist in some things I collect, but as I’m new to Chinese porcelain I’m focussing on what I like, what I can afford and what I have a chance of winning in auction! I don’t mind if what I buy was made in 2016... as long as I haven’t paid the price of the original!
So I too would prefer “yes, it’s modern, but if you like it, buy it - just don’t pay more than X amount”
if you’re a novice, you can feel awkward asking experienced people for their opinion because you know that you probably sound quite dumb. It may be quite irritating for the experienced collector to be answering basic questions or giving opinions on very ordinary pieces? But an abrupt reply could, unintentionally, knock someone’s confidence and make them feel they shouldn’t ask for advice anymore?
I love this forum and am learning more every day. What makes it almost unique in collecting circles is how willing people are to share their knowledge and opinion. Collectors in other fields are not as accommodating!

I agree whole heartily . I don't pay full price so Its not so bad if its a fake . It is hard to bring forth items to have judged by the forum but its a honor to to have that input from such a informed group . I just hope your patient with me when I post something that's a obvious fake but for me is just a learning curve .
Dear Debra,
I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but the chance to find an antique item for 5$ is close to zero. And there’s nothing to be learned from a collection of fakes.
Some say they just enjoy the hunt on flea markets and in thrift shops, well there’s nothing bad about that.
But with a bit of knowledge you can also hunt for real antiques and even make good deals from time to time. This forum has many examples of people who found great things for say 50 or 500$ in hidden corners on Ebay. Also sometimes members give a hint when bargains are on offer. You need a bit of knowledge for collecting and you can get it by reading books, going to museums and reading in the forum. It’s fun, enjoy it!

Dear George:
If you are still interested in adding this vase to your collection, it so far has 4 bids, the highest being $6.50 and the auction closes in about 15 hours from now. So you could pick it up for about $150 I think as compared to the about $899 cost as a Buy It Now item. I was wrong when I suggested that you consider acquiring it as a Buy It Now item, but Xin I think said it was not worth $899.
Unless things change radically I don't see that you can go wrong on this if you really like the vase. We are all rooting for you!
Regards,
Errol
Errol,
Winning Shill bidder with one feedback lurks - very suspicious (possible connection to seller)?
IMO Well done modern vase for decoration not worth more than $100 plus $99 shipping?
George
Errol and all,
This is exactly what was discussed earlier about shill bidding. The high bid is now at $104 and the high bidder with one feedback has put in a high Maximum bid so that any new bids are automatically raised by eBay. This is very suspicious and since the same vase is buy it now at $899 I wouldn't be surprised if the seller is behind this shill bidding. Not worth pursuing.
George
Dear George:
I agree. This is a classical example of shill bidding. The top bidder has a very limited bidding history. SEE LINK I assume the seller looked today, saw that the high bid was $6.50 (at more or less the time I posted above) and realized that someone might get away with this vase for about $30. Either he or a friend then put in a high maximum bid with the aim of getting someone else to bid it up to close to the $899 buy it now price. I agree this is not worth pursuing. There are lots of other nice vases of this type available . Also, the shipping cost from Miami seems rather high. I suspect that the vase will eventually reappear as a buy it now item unless some hapless buyer gets lured into competing with the shill bidder and actually wins the vase at an inflated price.
Anyway we had a lot of fun discussing this vase and, as you say, it did provide a real-time demonstration to illustrate the shill bidding thread.
Best regards,
Errol
Dear George:
As I'm sure you saw, the vase sold at auction for $404. The individual that could be a shill bidder stayed in it with a maximum bid to right before the auction's close when another presumably genune bidder outbid him. SEE eBAY LINK
So shill bidding does work. Most bidders are, however, unable to identify it. I think, however, that we have written enough about it here that most Forum members will now be on the look out for it and will avoid bidding in those types of situations.
Regards,
Errol
