What do you all think of this Wucai porcelain box, Wanli mark on the base , 16 cm's in diameter .
Dear carlyoung,
I don't think it's right for Wanli mark and period.
Best wishes,
Alan
Hi,
I am not very good with this, but I don't think it is period. Is that what you were wondering? Wanli dragons are usually lovely, very eager and comical looking. The decoration on this box all looks very flat and deliberate. The mark isn't good either.
I could so easily be wrong though! ? Hopefully someone who knows about these things will put me right!
Julia
Or agree with me. ? Didn't see your post, Alan. ?
I think a Wanli mark and period attribution might even be pushing the boat out , even for my level of optimism , but i feel it has some age.
I just took a quick look in the Wanli shipwreck book, and the foot is both the wrong color and consistency compared to the shipwreck pieces.
Just my 5 cents.

Micheal ,
I am not saying this piece is Ming period , but however Ming pieces have a wide variety of feet including ones like this one , buff colour well hand cut etc , I would doubt this was a shipwreck piece as it would not be export.
Alan
Would you be kind enough to elaborate on why not Ming ? What are your thoughts? I would like to learn .
Best regards
Dear Carl,
just look at a genuine wucai dragon and phoenix and see if the painting style is similar in your opinion. I believe that you will see the differences. It has not been decorated by a hand of that period.
It is a modern hand to me.
Giovanni
I think this is a modern piece , the glaze and enamels don't seem to have any age,
the decoration is in some respects a little strange (like the phoenix's body , and the dragon's feet and claws), and the colours look wrong too.
The mark looks like it has been very carefully and deliberately drawn, but not by someone whose job is always to write marks, as would have happened in the past (not sure that makes sense, but modern ceramicists are not used to writing with a brush everyday and the penmanship is too 'childish')
Also I think the footrim and the base don't look like you would expect - this buff colour is not common on ming pieces , as far as I know
tam
There is an example here:

This Image belongs to Alain Truong . Ming Period
Hi Tam , I do see what you mean about the marks . There are a variety of brighter and duller enamels on genuine pieces that i have seen so i find that hard to judge , I have also seen many different foot rims on Ming pieces including buff hand cut ones so i can't really clarify anything in my own mind regarding that issue either .
That is a lovely example from Christies. Just look at the dragon's face, very typically exuberant.
I agree there is more similarity with the Alain Truong one, but there are major differences in the way the heads/faces are done (much clearer on the genuine examples) and crucially, the movement is evident. They don't appear flat and static.
As for the mark, the blobs of ink are in the wrong places - I think. That implies someone copied something they were unfamiliar with. There is also no sign of beginning and end of the surrounding circles. Maybe not crucial, but I still consider it a concern if there are other concerns.
I think it is relatively modern.
Julia
I think months ago we have talked about this or this kind of thing. It's modern. You can use it. ?
