Hi Alan,
I would have to agree with you for the most part. I personally have had a number of transactions with this seller both on ebay and other.
I have never had a problem with her (I don't know Charles?).
Having said that this is a very high powered seller who descriptions of said items always appear to be scripted rather than from a subjective point.
It would be inconceivable for this seller or any other seller for that matter to always get it right, and that includes the big boys.
My advice to prospective buyers is very simple. Buy what you know and ALWAYS ask a lot of questions along the way.
If in doubt about a listing either seek help or leave it alone.
Mark
Dear Mark,
Your advice only to buy what you already know well is sound when it comes to this particular seller. The waters are muddied because, yes, the seller has indisputable authentic items, just as she (or he) has indisputable fakes. The mixture of fake and real items together in a listing is especially problematic and misleading. If a person doesn't really know the field well, seeing real items might persuade them that the fake ones must be real too.
As I explained in an earlier post, I too have bought from this seller, about five times now. I have had one item that I'm delighted with, two or three items whose damage wasn't properly accounted for in their online descriptions, and a couple of items that were claimed to be authentic but which on actual physical inspection turned out to be outright fakes.
Conclusion: buyers beware. And certainly at least be sceptical about the claims this seller makes for items that she (or he) sells. Indeed, be totally dismissive of those claims if you have the slightest reason to suspect that things are not stacking up correctly. And in order to make that judgement call, you need already to have a good grounding in your subject as a basis for judgement.
All the best,
Alan
There is also a 19th century example at the onlineonly.christies.com-site.
And one at Bukowski's, similar in shape but with different decoration:

oh wow, doesn't the attack by the two new members actually say it all ? I am following Peter for years and Joanies is very often in his news letter, even at times giving advance notice of auctions coming up. If they feel Peter was incorrect in his decision, would you then not, as an honest seller and knowledgeable dealer, ask for details and start a discussion on the elements that can prove that the vase is old or not? In stead they open a new account here and start attacking him for advertising his own items which he actually rarely does. To me, this is proof enough the vase is new.
Kind regards
Staartmees
I'd prefer not to comment on whether the vase sold by Joanie's is new or old, but I think Peter is wrong that such vases weren't made in the 19th century, which the one at Christie's strongly suggests. I was actually following the sale at Joanie's because such a vase was also availabe from this Japanese dealer on eBay (gyro0702) from whom I have purchased a handfull of very interesting and promising pieces. I reseached it and concluded it was a 19th/20th apocryphally marked copy. Unfortunately I haven't kept the pictures but he recently sold another blue and white vase that shares the archaic 'hu' prototype with the vase in focus:
I don't think it's modern given the glaze impurities and kiln flaws etc. but probably not a period piece either. But listings of similar shaped vases with the eigth auspicious symbols og buddhism described as Qianlong mark and period are available online, then you can compare them if you have the time to search for them. AND another reason why I mention this Japanese dealer is beacuse of a conjuncture with another sale by him and Joanie's: A lotus shaped warming bowl with J.T. Tai sticker at the base which she said came from estate of Michael Vermeer:
It's almost certainly not Qingliangsi ru ware as the description says but it's interesting to note how closely the glaze mathes with an jun ware incense burner at the met:
https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/460901
And if the J.T. Tai provenance could be confirmed then the $ 68,900 paid was perhaps a rather decent price given the rare shape, fine glaze and perfect condition?
And then there was another incense burner from the Japanese dealer with similar looking glaze:
Very interestingly how the glaze of that one matches almost perfectly with another Song dynasty jun bowl, this time at British Museum:
I beat up myself severely for not having purchased that one since it's such an interesting piece
