Hi all, The Song dynasty mastered colors and glazes, they experimented a lot and all did not come out right, Porcelain would never be the same again, here is a partial red vase in the glaze and a very old reign mark

Richard,
another superb piece, the only one in (your) World.
Why don't you join with the guy in this link? Together you will make a formidable couple:
Hi Richard,
just out of interest: do you buy all these dirt crusted items from the same source and do you clean them yourself?
Birgit
Shinagami - Yes I bought almost all from a 92 year old man, his collection, I met him in Nanjing, he was my girlfriends grandpa, I was not looking for porcelains at the time, he wanted to help buy a little bigger apartment for his son, daughter in law and granddaughter, My girlfriend was his granddaughter, she was sleeping on a couch in the living room and it was on the 4th floor with no elevator, I did not know what I was buying, most looked like junk, rust, grime from the ocean etc... but he did tell me that they were very old and I did believe him because I knew he was a good man, he lived through the rape of Nanking and told me stories, I felt ripped off later as me and the girl broke up, I kept the junk in boxes even afraid to open the boxes and never told anyone what I payed for that junk, I knew nothing about porcelains and only knew they are fragile
Once I got more time I started opening the boxes and studying and it took a long time for even me to realize what I had
Here is a picture of them and myself in 2002
P.S. The first teapot he gave me and not knowing what I had I gave it away to a lady that collected little Chinese teapots
richard severson
Hi - to answer the other question about cleaning them, it`s very difficult, I broke one, the rusted ones, this rust has been on them for hundreds of years and 35% hydrogen peroxide will not work, nor any other average cleaner, but I did learn that the glaze is truly a hard material and does not scratch easily
richard severson
Was there no trouble with Chinese customs when you took the boxes out of China? It’s not allowed to export porcelain older than 100 years I think, or is it 80 years?
Birgit
Shinigami - Customs is a joke, let me explain, most workers are not scholarly, its a low level job, even in USA, they would have to be experts of the best kind, and they would not be working at the customs department if they were. They would be curators at the museums etc...
With a lot of fake things that look so real in paintings, porcelains, bronzes, jades, and so much more it`s astounding to think that no antiques leave China because China has a law in effect.
They can`t even control the Tombs from being robbed and to try and control the mail, the airplane packages, etc...
I had a few go into customs and I was worried, some say they either confiscate them, make you pay a tariff tax or something but all came out of customs without a single problem, I had only a few sent each time in smaller boxes in case they confiscated them, and I also bring some on the plane each time with me with no problem
We always wrote on the box in Chinese "Imitation pottery" and only an expert would know the difference and they have none on the front line, too many boxes moving each day, millions and millions, no way to control this
Hope that helps - rich
richard severson
Shinagami - the real problem is not that 99.9% of porcelains are fake, No, it`s that 99.9% of people believe that, belief is the problem but reality is so different, But if everyone knew what I know then, no one would get a deal, so thank God they believe that while I will continue looking where they pass by
richard severson
Furthermore, not even one of my boxes were ever opened, I know because of all the tape on them
richard severson
Hi Rich,
Nice photos and a really interesting story.
People are free to believe whatever they want to believe and if that makes them happy and doesn't harm anyone else then who cares what others think.
Enjoy your collection.
James
p.s Other members, beware of your partner's grandfather.
Is this an elaborate joke? I mean no offence if not, I will have to echo James's sentiment if that is the case.
Dear Richard,
thanks for telling us the story of your collection. It seems to be a win-win situation, where both you and the Chinese family got what made them happy.
Birgit
Shinigami - I forgot to mention that I did not buy them an apartment totally, they sold their apartment and they had a little money but they needed some, at that time in China apartments were being built everywhere and rather cheap, about $60-70,000 could get you a nice one there, Yes and I would have helped them anyway but Grandpa insisted and he really wanted me to take care of his life long collection because his own family did not really want it and he knew it. Thanks for your comment
