I would say this is a Victorian vase from somewhere like the Royal Doulton factory in England - there is a technical name for this kind of glaze , high fired lustre ware or perhaps flambe, which was very popular in the Victorian period, and the Staffordshire potteries produced lots of planters, large vases and other items with this effect, and art nouveau -ish design .

hope this helps.

It is such a lovely vase, I agree.  I also think it is probably Victorian, I have a tile with this kind of glaze.  The leaves around the neck were also fairly popular at that time.  If you do a search on Victorian majolica, something helpful may come up.

Thank you so much Tam and Julia! That is very interesting. I would have never guessed it to be Victorian. It looks so chinese to me and it just feels very, very old. Thanks again for your help!

Best.

Hi - Goodwillhunter, to me it looks like early Tang dynasty with that green glaze and middle eastern style that the Tang did so much of because of the Silk road, it has the very common leaves or scarab wings on top that you see on many vases, Very lovely vase ! I wished I owned it

Salt glaze pottery.  Manufactured all over Europe and England could be Elizabethan (or earlier) to late Victorian.  Victorians used salt gaze on every inch hing from pottery to chimney pots.  Google English salt gaze pottery, lots of items with the same look.

before the importation of China into Europe this is all they had. Imagine the exoticness of fine porcelain in the late 1500’s when all you’ve had is salt glaze.

Hello Rich, Hello Ron

Thank you for your feedback. I have to admit that it being Tang, Liao, or Yuan crossed my mind more than a few times. I did a little research and I believe it was on the Gotheborg website where the author described a good ole’ old smell test to authenticate pottery from the Tang Dynasty. So I put some water around the vase’s mouth where the clay is exposed due to damage. The clay absorbed the water amazingly well and it gave off a very unpleasant smell. Of course this all pretty subjective and I have no idea how clay that is only, let’s say, 200 years old smells when exposed to water. I also read that the leaf pattern first appeared in the Yuan dynasty and that the old Sancai kilns operated well into the Yuan dynasty. Of course this is all speculation on my part but that’s what makes it fun. I can see the resemblance to some of the Victorian Majolica items but they are much better quality than mine is. My vase looks way more primitive in its workmanship and there are a lot of impurities in the glaze. I admit that chances are better at it being English rather than 1000 year old Chinese; although, it looks more Chinese than it looks English, doesn’t it? ?

Best,

C.

Hello from London, UK

? I'm 99% sure this piece is not English. It does look late 19th Century... My gut says, French or maybe Spanish.

All the best

Lewis, your thinking a Morrish influence to the design. That would make sense.

Hi - The leaf design can be found on Shang dynasty bronze vase 3000 years ago, I have a few,   and The Song dynasty for sure copied many of the Shang bronzes,  The leaf can be a scarab wing that the Chinese use so often,  It the vase smells like a tomb then it was buried, I know that smell so well, The color is definitely Tang green and that brownish green was the color of Chinese pottery since early times before the Han dynasty, that's why I say  early Tang as they were just coming into that green and the other colors

Love that Vase treat it with care and love

Dear Goodwillhunter,

you evidently have a modest knowledge about Chinese ceramic if you think that this vase could be Chinese.

There are zero chances of it being Chinese, do not hear who is suggesting you the opposite.

I have no knowledge about European or Near East pottery, so I can't help you here except assuring you that it has nothing to do with Chinese ceramics.

@clayandbrush

Dear Giovanni,

I thought I would give an update on the vase I purchased a couple of years ago. I noticed in yesterdays Sotheby’s sale this Sancai Glazed Vase from the Liao Dynasty which is very similar to the vase we discussed 2 years ago. I am not claiming that my vase is this old without a proper test, but it’s undeniable very similar in style to the Sotheby’s vase. I thought you might find this interesting.

Best,

C
