Hi all -

Attached images of a rare Longquan yuhuchunping, H. 20.5cm, recently acquired from Robert McPherson ...

Base on bronze originals, it has been constructed in several sections, the joining lines around the neck, lower body and foot are clearly visible, and its rather heavy! ...

Covered in a thick, even olive toned glaze it has carved plantain leaves to the neck and lotus scrolls the body, the lower part of which has moulded lotus petals. The slightly compressed/squat shape, combined with fish handles whose tails support double loops attached to the side of the vase, is quite unusual  ...

Not the best colour, and one of the loop handles is broken and rather crudely repaired - but a rather interesting and quite rate example of type ...

The dating attributed to such pieces is always quite broad - probably late Yuan to early Ming - so between 1330 to 1450 ...

Thanks Stuart, very helpful to see close-ups of a genuine piece. It has also addressed something I often wondered about and that was whether the rings were fixed in position or loose on old pieces.

Bit embarrassing to admit that maybe, but I haven't seen enough pictures of genuinely old celadons like this to know, and the thought only comes into my mind occasionally so I have never followed it up.

Or maybe they aren't always fixed to the body?

@julia

Hi Julia -

The bronze originals, or at least the ones I have seen/handled, always have unfixed/loose rings but, as far as I'am aware, on these Longquan yuhuchunpings examples the lower part of loop is always attached to the body ...

Hello Stuart

Although I collect bowls and cups rather than vases and so my knowledge is limited, your new purchase does look quite special and rare due to the handles on that shape of vase. You must be really pleased with it.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

@jeremy

Hi Jeremy -

The most desirable and highest quality glaze tonnes on Longquan wares are either various blue/green tones, usually seen Song period wares or a deep sea green type, mostly found on Yuan and early Ming pieces. Olive green is not the best colour but, at least on this piece, the tone is even throughout and doesn't exhibit any yellow/brown discolouration sometimes seen on such wares due to misfiring ...

The rarity of form combined with double loop fish handles, and the beautiful 'feel' when held, for me outweighs the glaze colour - although this is a personal choice. The glaze colour/tone alone would exclude consideration for many ...

But yes, very pleased to have acquired ...

Stuart,

So thrilling to see you acquired this stunning and quite rare example... congratulations!

I actually think the slight olive hue of the glaze’s tone actually compliments the piece’s overall composition quite well!
Particularly appealing contrast offered with the oxide foot subtly peering from its base when displayed upright..

Awesome addition!

Hi Stuart,

The shape of your vase is really strong and bold. I also really like the fish handles, which are a nice touch. Do you collect Longquan celadons?

Cheers,

Will

Dear Stuart,

what a superb example. Looking at its base is worth a lot; it is a real pleasure to see such open-door details.

I like the color very much, although it must be said that it is extremely hard to catch the real hue of celadons in photos.

Superb and rare item!!

Regards,

Giovanni

Hi Stuart,

I am pleased you bought this form from Robert. I recall viewing this when he first offered it for sale.

Definitely worth a full restoration in my opinion.

Congratulations!

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the kind words, thoughts and opinions express by everyone - its very much appreciated ...

Stuart

@wiley

Hi Will,

No, I don’t collect Longquan wares as such but have had the pleasure of seeing/handling quite a number of examples over the years, both in auction houses and private collections ...

I have been through my database/library and left a response to the Gu vase you posted under that thread ...
