@sharonp There’s a difference to a modern mirror like surface. The surface of this vase is as good as they got at the time but I wouldn’t call it a mirror. A very nice acquisition, Vic.

I think you’ve really hit on something regarding how inexperienced auction houses and sellers are overlooking the importance of provenance.
Consequently, I think the opportunity to buy really good pieces is upon us!

Coincidentally, I’m in California (my first trip), and just got back from a three day camp out to attend an estate sale at the famed Beverly House of William Randolph Hearst - one of America’s most important antiquity collectors of the early 20th c.
The current owner bought the home in 1975. And while Hearst’s heirs auctioned and donated much of his possessions before the house was sold, there definitely were a few pieces left over that the current owner included in the sale.
Three days sleeping in a van so that my wife and I could be 1st and 2nd paid off big time.

Beautiful presentation!
The seller brought some pieces to the sale from outside the estate, and he lacked formal knowledge of Asian antiques, so there was no guarantee of provenance.
However, I was invited back to the property last night by the current property owner who was able to identify which pieces he acquired while jet setting the world in the 1970-80’s, and which came with the house. But, he has no paperwork.
So, my work is not done yet- I’ll have to reach out to various museums and the Hearst Castle, and go through their photo archives / records of his Asian collection.
Not so worried about the provenance for the furniture because the market is driven by the material (zitan & huanghuali).
However, I bought this stone carved Guanyin that was out by the main fountain that I’d like to confirm it’s provenance… it’s Ming.. maybe earlier, but lack of care has taken its toll on the surface. Even so, the carving is quite nice, so it might benefit from having good provenance.
@imperialfinegems Well, it’s a bit shiny looking because I just cleaned it, but the stone looks quite beautiful.

Thank you for the additional pictures of your stone carving.
This would need to be examined by people who have experience or in the know with these.
Personally I think it's highly probable to be guangxu or perhaps a little bit later like republican period.
But I have absolutely zero experience with these things. The perfect circles along with the swirling is problematic and often seen on more newer pieces.
Anyway even if it turns out to a newer carving (I think it is earlier btw) it's still desirable. This would look awesome in the right setting.
It's all very intriguing.
