Hi all -
I have recently acquired this 18th C Sacrificial blue monochrome vase at auction. H. 26.8 cm ...
It has a few condition issues, two small glaze flakes and a larger chip to the mouthrim, 4th image, and various glaze surface scratches but these, luckily, are all shallow ...
Provenance as follows:-
Mrs & Mrs R. I. Eisenbach-Erie Collection.
Sold part of Lot 126, Sotheby’s London 6 July 1950.
Bluett and Sons, London.
Sold to Mrs Dorothy Beverley, 14th November 1950.
Mr & Mrs Eisenbach-Erie’s were long term members of the Oriental Ceramic Society, London and loaned pieces to the 1947 Celadon and 1949 Tang Exhibitions. When sold in 1950 there collection comprised of 160 lots of ceramics and 50 lots of works of art. Bluett’s, one of the great old London dealers, were very active at the sale, spending a total £443-10 shillings, last two images ...
Dorothy Beverley’s husband, Russell, was regular clients of Bluett’s between 1936-49, buying mostly celadons but also some jades and Chinese paintings. He died in 1950 and Dorothy subsequently married Lancelot Spicer, also client of Bluett’s, although an infrequent buyer ...
Somewhat fortunately, none of the above provenance was mentioned in the catalogue entry, which only stated:-
‘From the collection of Mrs Dorothy Spice (d.1950’s)’ ...
If the complete history had been known, I would not have been able to acquire ...
It is know in the hands of my restorer for a good clean and the chips made good ...
Stuart
Hey Stuart,
As the others said: congratulations!
I can’t imagine how thrilled you were to find out the additional information, along with acquiring an already fine and beautiful example.
W&W rocks; glad you walked away with a forever keeper!
Hope you enjoy for many years to come.
Best regards friend,
-JRN
@imperialfinejems @julia
Hi Mark and Julia -
Thank you both very much ...
Julia -
The stand is nicely carved but has some damage which has undergone repair at some point and appears quite old?! I have very little knowledge on the differing wood types, but a good friend who collects scholars objects knows a lot about this subject, so I will ask him for his thoughts ..
It come with the vase although it is, perhaps, slightly to big ...?!
Stuart
Apart from gratulating to your find I also say thank you for the good pictures of vase and bottom. The first picture where the houses of the street and the photographer 😁 are visible is a very good learning example. That’s exactly how a high quality old glaze should reflect. Modern fakes have a mirrorlike surface that reflects every detail perfectly. It’s a feature that can be checked even on bad Ebay pictures but is often overlooked.
Birgit
Yes, it does look a bit big, but it is beautiful. Please let me know if you find out more about it.
Hi JRN, Birgit and Julia,
Again, thank you very much ...
JRN -
Yes, delighted to acquire ...
Luckily a very good friend work for Bluett's from 1978 until the firm closed in the early 90's. He was able to acquire most of the company archives dating back to around 1900, and has provided provenance details to many of the auction houses since. I have spent many hours looking through these archives, a fascinating, and now rather expensive, information resource ...
Yes W&W have such interesting sales, something for everyone and, as I'am sure you know, always have some wonderful Japanese objects ...
Birgit -
Luckily my new iPhone has a good camera - the image quality has nothing to do with me!!😉😂 ...
Yes, such 18th C monochromes have a wonderful glaze surface, just beautiful to look at and wonderful to feel/hold😊...
Julia -
Yes, a bit large but still very nice nevertheless!😊...
A pleasure to let you know if any more information on the wood type is forthcoming ...
Stuart
@shinigami I would like to better understand the difference in glaze you refer to. This example seems very mirror-like to me so I am not clear what you mean by fakes being more mirror-like. If possible can you show an example so I can see? Thanks for sharing your knowledge, Birgit!
Hi John, I notice these mirror-like surfaces all the time, but now that you asked me I had to search a while for a suitable example. Here is a vase where you can clearly see the photographer‘s studio lights. That’s what a I call a mirror, not the rather blurry reflection on Stuart‘s vase.
Birgit
@shinigami Thanks for the example, but for some reason that's a tough one for me to distinguish. I'll have to meditate on it and look at a lot of examples over time I think to see the difference. But I will at least now be aware of the idea and be on the lookout in whatever way I am able to currently understand.
Hi all -
So, after 8 months collected this from my restorer yesterday ...
It’s undergone a very good clean and the mouhrim chip/two glaze flakes restored ...
Delighted with the work done, and managed to find a somewhat better fitting stand to place upon!!😊 ...
Stuart
@ming1449 For every rule there is an exception, the glaze on this genuine vase not only shows details of the room, but the house across the street. It is a beautiful piece with provenance, outstanding color. Congratulations on having successful restoration. Sharon
