I made it private as I felt the discussion was generally resolved, I can make it public again if you would like. But basically, yes I would state that it was as it appeared to be.
@lotusblack The same vase as the lamped one. If you go back a few catalogues, you may find the other one.. 😎 Finding that made me certain.

@lotusblack It is very common in the auction world I think. People look to flip things and see if they can make a profit which is perfectly legitimate. I do think the restoration could have been described in more detail though.

@johnshoe I go back and forth whether to share knowledge, I do respect Peter for being an open book of knowledge to the public. There is nothing else like it in Asian art as most people with knowledge keep it to themselves, because to share the knowledge is to raise the ability of their competition. Also knowledge is hard won. Peter is a brilliant resource that I wouldn't take for granted. Though through his openness he is also wrong at times (I have noticed reproductions in the newsletter for example), but perhaps that is also the price of being open with your opinion (you will make mistakes). All the time you must trust nothing completely and think for yourself. In this case, I will encapsulate the thread simply below:
The impetus to start the thread was born of viewing Peters video and recognizing the origin of a vase that he claimed was fake at 22:00
I will state no opinion in regard to the authenticity of any of the items mentioned in Peters video, some of them I cannot determine myself also.
Indeed, that itself is useful to know.
I will also add that sharing knowledge is sometimes a thankless task, you are often met with haughtiness and you can end up spending most of the time trying to argue the truth that is clear. Not to be confused with expected skepticism and debate that is normal and healthy.

@elm no expert is 100 percent right all the time as no piece is a 100 percent guaranteed. He is simply a resource of an opinion which we use to say does this piece have a greater chance at being authentic or not. I stop playing into the whole authentic or not awhile back as I learned the market sets the price. But like Peter said it’s an opinion only and unless it’s handled it’s an opinion from a computer screen. We at the forum watch the videos and learn from each other sometimes things get heated but we learn a lot this information help to hone in our skills that one day we might actually buy that million dollar piece unfortunately everyone else is doing it also. I predict in the United States in the next 20 years a large portion of the lost treasures will no longer be here due to the competitive nature of Asia art. This site here is actually monitored due to its ability of members to find lost works in estates and stores. So I would hope you would be more inclined to share your knowledge with everyone here as a collective we are more successful.
@lotusblack Yes everyone makes mistakes with Chinese antiques including myself, what differentiates people like Peter or Rob from most people is that the result of their thought processes are public. I think what Peter does is rare and admirable in that regard, he is a very knowledgeable person and he shares that knowledge freely. Even experts at the big auction houses have to lean on provenance or the opinions of dealers and scholars to properly understand pieces. Technically pretty much anything could have been made yesterday, so there is almost always a possibility something purporting to be old is actually modern.
