Hello Everyone,
I found this Chinese Painting of horse in Lesile Hindman's auction gallery, their estimate price is between $20K- $40K. The painting will be offered in March's Asian auction. However, I found an exact same painting sold $400 million in Beijing in 2011. Do you think the artist painted two exactly painting on same day?
Thanks
Charles

A lot of copies have been made of these paintings by Xu Beihong. I think you misunderstood the selling price from 2011 though. 400 Million seems way off. Similar paintings t0 this one the "Galloping Horse" series sell in the $400,000 to around $4,200,ooo range for more elaborate ones with colors etc. . I am not sure who there authenticated it, unless perhaps they have some good paperwork/provenance along with it.

Peter, I thought I have a typo, the price is 4 million dollars not 400 million. It was $24 million Chinese yuan.
Cj
No problem, if the painting checks out, it will probably bring around 10 times or more over the high estimate. (just a guess)
Who knows? It may also sell for $150,000 to $200,000, but I doubt it.

Leslie Hindman Auctioneers has over hundred lots including this one from same collector. After finding the original painting, I start suspect all other lots from the collectors.

Hi Charles,90% of Chinese paintings are fake even in China Auction houses, can't image how one collector
can have so much real paintings,he would be very famous collector in the world if so.
and no aritist will make two same product.
that is my opnion.
Charles - I like taking chances on things but not for that amount of money, this kind of painting is very easy to copy, even I could do it
If you found it at a yardsale for 100.00 well then its worth a chance if but not for 20,000 unless they guaranteed it

Thank you, Kevin and I agree, this type of painting is not difficult to reproduce very convincingly and would require a considerable amount of close examination to prove it is by the artist.

Those type of paintings are done spontaneously on a moment of inspiration. Artists do those paintings very quickly. Very often a lot of attempts are made on the same drawing (sometimes making small changes) until the artist is satisfied. Then he will select a final product to represent his masterpiece. Nowadays, they may put an extra seal or signature at the end. In the old days the substandard pieces we often given away to friends, admirers and often times get stolen.
My 2 cents worth
Ken
All good points, its very different than painting in the west.

What it really comes down to is provenance. For example, Christie's is offering a collection of paintings this year from a family who had an intimate relationship over many years with Zhang Daqian. That's what you need to guarantee a payoff for your investment.
LH is a fine auction house, great things and people, but they regularly lose their specialists in the Asian department. I have also noticed an increased amount of asian consignments coming from asian clients, even asian clients located abroad. That is atypical for a midwestern mid-range auction house. Take that as what you will.
Looked at the catalog this year, was fairly disappointed. Also thought estimates were too strong for nearly everything. It's called an "auction" not a "retail"... takes a little bit of the fun out of it.
I've talked about research before... Sometimes, in my opinion, when good things come up at LH, they may have passed at other places in the previous few years. So, maybe the painting is a copy/print... or maybe it is the same one and was never paid for in 2011 for a certain reason and is now being offered by the consignor to clear house. Research.
It is what it is!
Hello everyone,
thank you for sharing your opinions, it is very helpful. If you go to LiveAuctioneers, you will find that over 95% of Chinese painting are fakes.
One thing I don’t agree with you guys is that this kind of painting is very easy to copy. Actually, Chinese ink water paintings are very hard to copy. First, the painting is created in “short” time with hairbrush, only well trained artist can do it, no copiers can copy them well. Hairbrush is tough to control. In fakes, brush stokes are ugly. Second, those painting requires an artist to use only one color to express his object, thus, light or dark all depend on an artist experience and understanding of the object.
The horse on left sold $4 million and the horse on right is definitely a print. The difference of the color is obviously. A lot of fake makers print the lithograph into rice paper and put them in glass frame. Under glass, it is not easy to tell an origin and a copy. Now, computer scan and print is popular in fake make.
