A very nice example of what I believe is highly probable to be 18th century or perhaps 19th century. Done in the Ming style perhaps!
I also think it is two species of wood. However the images are not clear enough to determine.
Highly probable to be hongmu and other.
Just my thoughts. Perhaps if @Brettm aka Michael logs in he may have a opinion.
As you already know identifying wood types by images is very tricky. Your chairs are as you have already posted exceptionally heavy which is very promising. These would need to be seen and handled in person.
A supberb pair my friend!
BTW I did post a earlier opinion but obviously forgot to send it. 😊
Mark
@imperialfinegems Better late than never! Glad you enjoyed the post - a very fun discussion.
I completely understand why you and others might think the chairs are composed of multiple wood types- in fact, side chairs are characteristically composed of secondary woods, and very often multiple woods.
In the case of these chairs, the grain and color of the wood is a good match through the chair.
The carved panel and apron have a black patina, and could easily pass as zitan, but I’m fairly confident it is hongmu.
The patina is simply more established since it’s a carved surface, and consequently not cleaned as aggressively.
But, if you know anyone who believes these are zitan and wants to pay the kind of prices zitan achieves at Christie’s , I’m game and we can split the winnings!
Anyway, I think the value of this thread is how it shows (once again) that we can not hold fast about rules on determine wood type based upon color and grain without considering the entire piece as a whole (its form, degree of carving, age).
We’ve had similar discussions about how porcelains are assessed, and I would assume the same is true for jade objects.
Absolutely greeno107tl
The grain on hongmu is as you know often confused with zitan and other. It's a more straight grain. The crab claw are often added as you would be aware of.
I have a brush pot I bought that wS sold as zitan but I think it is hongmu at best.
I can show you if you like. I just got to find it again. 😊

Here are some close up images of said bitong.. I bought it a number of years ago. It was listed as Qing zitan wood. It wasn't expensive from memory.
But on close examination I don't think it's zitan. Has the same purplish colour with gold flecks. I just thought att it wasn't zitan and out it in a storage box.
Mark
@imperialfinegems That's some great carving. It does look like hongmu mainly because the depth and sharpness of the carving looks just a hair less than zitan biting, but that could be an optical illusion created by the photos.
I bought a large root wood bitong last week. The seller believed it to be a burlwood planter. Maybe it is, but it’s quite nice I think… perhaps another post.
I think your correct my friend. Hongmu wood. And it floats in water.
I think it's 19th century. But we'll carved. I was the only bidder at $700 aud.
I should have steadied my hand when I was taking the pictures. A little bit shaky imo.
Apparantly a very popular scene for carvers. Have seen a number of them since with very similar scenes etc.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Seeing the side view photo, it’s really pleasing to the eye.
I’m guessing the photo is from the auction since it has the catalog number. And I also bet you that you got it for such a good price because they sat the bitong on a modern base, and that scared off some bidders.
Very nice!

Hi Greeno -
My congratulations on finding, recognising and acquiring these lovely pair of chairs ...
I hope they do very well for you when resold ...

Hello,
Very late to the party. Very nice chairs. Like the carving and the curved shape to the back. Can't add much to the timber question due to the photo's you have handled lots of timber items Greeno so you are best placed to do the ID. Think the curve to the back and quality of the carving suggests early 19thc. $500.0 for the pair a bargain now days for that amount you don't get much from the flat pack furniture emporiums.
Mark very nice brush pot think you have also obtained a bargain.
Good to see for both of you.
Cheers
Michael
