Hello My Fellow Forum Members!

Did anyone else happen to notice this lot from Briggs Auction in Garnet Valley?

https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/107862819_two-chinese-porcelain-articles

Estimated for $200-$300 and sold for a whopping $160K USD plus the BP? Am I missing something with this? I am assuming that people thought it was mark and period, however I have bid and bought at Briggs many times (about an hour from me) and they don't usually get that level of high end stuff.

What do all of you ladies and gentleman think?

Looking forward to a discussion on this!

Justin Galczynski

Isn't that a yongzheng mark? Not sure it is genuine as I haven't seen a lot of dragon pieces from that period, but it looks nicely done and wow, lucky seller!

The dragon bowl with cover is Yongzheng imperial ware. That's why.

@xin_fawis thanks Xin, I doubted that it actually was just because of the type of thing Briggs usually gets and had. So you feel that it is mark and period? I am surprised Peter didn't mention this one in the video!

@jg1133

I know this piece. A Chinese dealer who travels a lot sent me pictures of this one. Already checked. It's Yongzheng.

I guess Peter is not familiar with this kind of wares. 😉

@xin_fawis That is great - I am so surprised that it is actually Yongzheng. I almost went to look at it before the sale because it was so close. At that time it was already at $2k USD so I figured something was up.

I sold and bought a bunch of stuff at Briggs over the years. Usually I am surprised when I list and sell something in an auction, but for the complete opposite reason 🤣

@xin_fawis Thanks so much for sharing this - is that the actual bowl or just a close comp?

I didn’t realise we could. Is that a younger you? Sorry, being nosey. 😊

And yes, it is a gorgeous bowl. Not only am I unfamiliar with Yongzheng dragons, I have not seen this kind of bowl with lid from that period either -  as far as I can remember.

Interesting how the lid sits over the bowl, is that a feature of these pieces from that period?

@jg1133 @julia @imperialfinegems

Hi Justin, Julia and Mark -

Xin is quite correct, this is a known Imperial Yongzheng form/design. Attached additional images of cover/description citing  other known examples from Sotheby’s sale catalogue ...

Hi Julia -

Yes, a recognised form from YZ, also known with other compositions. Attached image/description of a similar YZ m/p doucai bowl/cover with designs of magpies, camellia and prunus branches/flowers, sold Lot 55, Sby’s HK 6 April 2016 for HK$5,000,000, ex Roger Pilkington Coll ...

Thanks Stuart, beautiful examples and very helpful.  It is useful seeing the slight difference in design compared to later examples where the lid sits slightly in the bowl.

@Julia,

Yes it's much younger me!

You can change both your avatar/image and display name. Your user name remains the same. Should I leave the image or change it I ponder.

That bowl that Justin posted was a supberb example. Even the other one was beautiful but not in the same league. Thank you Stuart for the additional images and information regarding these beautiful bowls. Very much appreciated.

In my opinion assuming of course that the bowl was in good condition it was not expensive.

I might have to upload a picture of myself in my early twenties as well. I think I have one where I'm looking kind of like a drunk Ozzy Ozbourne. Maybe I'll use that one.  John
