@jeremy

Back in the early 90s, Sue Valinstein (A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics) of the Met told me about attending a conference in Taiwan where the attendees were gifted a contemporary hare’s fur teabowl.  She cheerfully admitted that she couldn’t tell the difference between that modern bowl and a Song example in terms of clay, glaze and technique.  Contemporary potter’s have at least thirty years of experience in making reproductions of these types of wares.  I have a fairly good visual memory and I see these posted pictures of ‘matching’ cup & cup stand sets and I wonder why I have never seen similar examples in museums or earlier important collections?  Without rock solid provenance, I wouldn’t place much faith in any attribution to the Song Dynasty for a lot of this stuff.  Could I order a set of six from China?

@william

In regards to the cup and stand sets I did not post the examples on this topic. However, I have seen a Song dynasty Ding cup and stand in the Beijing Palace Museum collection, which I assume is genuine in this important collection, the link to it is,

https://m-digicol.dpm.org.cn/cultural/detail?id=c15d5dc38a214fe599a2bbdec0435ed0&source=0

In regards to my Jian tea bowl, I have asked both Peter and also an Asian Art expert in the UK for their opinions. I am happy with this and I will not be looking to have a TL test.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Woops, I meant to respond  to Sharon’s comment & link to modern Song style bowls.  I was not considering your tea bowl in my concerns over these matching cup & stand sets.  I would be curious to know if the set you reference entered the palace collection recently as an archeological find or had been in the collection in previous centuries?

Unfortunately the Beijing Palace Museum only show images of the pieces in their collection and the period as to when they were made. If you click on the page that the I have given the link to, you will be sent to page that you can zoom in on the image.

The British Museum tends to give some background regarding their items and below is a link to the Ru ware example in their collection,

I have checked them on my tablet and they seem to be working. Perhaps the settings on your internet browser are blocking the links.

The British Museum website is quite easy to navigate in order to see their online collection.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Hello All
Further to my previous video showing my magnetic Shuiji kilns Jian tea bowl, I have done a second one showing how magnets are attracted to this bowl, but not to another Song dynasty tea bowl with a hare’s fur glaze, which I believe may be from the Lianjiang wreck. I hope that you may find this comparison video showing my bowls from different kilns interesting.

Kind regards,

Jeremy
