Hello All
Some time ago I mentioned that my Jian oil spot tea bowl had magnetic properties. I have tried my Cizhou-type russet streaked and hare’s fur glaze bowl and a shipwreck Jian hare’s fur glaze tea bowl to see if they also have this same property, but it is only my oil spot tea bowl from the kilns at Shuiji that attracts a magnet.
I have done a short video showing how small magnetic discs stick to my bowl which I hope that you find interesting. Please accept my apology for the lack of professionalism in my video.
Perhaps other members of the forum have Jian tea bowls that have magnetic properties and can share this.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
It would be addictive to me, like Etch A Sketch. Thank you, that was fun. Sharon
Thank you Sharon. I doubt that this is a feature that auction houses may wish to use when they are offering Jian bowls for sale, but you never know.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
My poor video technique does not show the glaze very well, so below is a photograph showing part of the glaze on my tea bowl.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Really interesting. The only really common magnetic minerals are magnetite (Fe3O4, an iron oxide with ferrous iron), and Ilmenite (FeTiO3). Both contain iron (Fe) in the partially reduced form (Fe+2, as opposed to Fe+3). Obviously, conditions in the kiln were anoxic (reducing) when the bowl was fired, and one of these, probably the more common magnetite, was formed in the iron-rich glaze. I am amazed it is so abundant that the glaze is magnetic!
Very interesting! What made you think to try it - or was the discovery accidental?
Hello Julia
I happened to have a small fridge magnet on the table when I was looking at the glaze on my bowl and just tried it against the glaze. You may recall that I had mentioned noticing this in one of my previous posts and you kindly pointed out some information about Jian oil spot bowls having magnetic properties.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Is that a real Jian kiln oil-spot bowl you've got there. Wasn't it expensive to purchase?
I have asked Peter and he is confident that it is a Song dynasty Jian bowl.
It still retains a proportion of soil residue on the surface of the unglazed part the surface which makes it looks a light brown, but on close inspection it is clear that the body is a dark grey and I have attached a close up photograph showing this. In Robert D Mowry's book ' Hare's Fur, Tortoiseshell and Partridge Feathers’, he shows a couple of bowls, No.’s 76 and 77, that also appear to have a light brown unglazed surface in the images, but he describes them both as having dark grey stoneware. On page 210 he states that the slate grey to black body usually fired a purplish brown, but in some cases it fired medium to dark grey, which is the case on my bowl and that such bowls were made in kilns at Shuiji.
There is Jian bowl in the Sotheby's in the upcoming sale which apparently was also excavated that also retains the soil in the course unglazed texture,
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Peter could say it's a real one without handling it?? That would be awesome if he can say that from pictures only. I have a promising Jian oil-spot bowl on my rader-screen but I'm not able to authenticate it and there is no guarentee in this case.
I am happy to rely on Peter's expertise and I am sure that he has handled more Song dynasty items than I will ever do.
I realise that if I was to sell it a TL test would be required, but I am not considering selling it and so I do not wish to spoil it whilst it is in my collection.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Sounds great! I might send pictures of the bowl I'm looking at to Peter then. Only drawback is that the auction end in three days. He might not be able to reply in time.
