The file attached is from one of the finest privately owned Jade and other items collected in the first half of the 20th century.
Very well defined collection that at the time was not all that much paid for at the time.
Very well done write up and pictures to boot (not like mine!)
A collection to admire. Readers will note that this collection is not for sale and the owners are very private individuals.

Dear Mark:
Thanks for posting this. The photographs are excellent, but the text is blurred. It's readable but a real strain on the eyes. Is there any way you can re-post this with the text being clearer? I'd like to read it when I get time to do so.
Interestingly, the other night I encountered a jade item that combined the two themes of one of our recent threads namely whether one can pick up valuable Chinese antique items at bargain prices and how one evaluates jade items for age. The venue was the PBS show "Antiques Roadshow." A lady brought in a green plate that was beautifully carved with a lotus pattern in relief. It looked to be about 11 inches in diameter. She had apparently bought it at a garage sale for about $400 many years ago. The expert said that it was an antique Spinach jade plate with highly detailed carving from the late Qing dynasty period and that he valued it at about $24,000. I did not get a very good look at it but it seemed really beautiful apart from what I thought were some black inclusions that were not mentioned. Do you attach much significance to black inclusions in jade?
Regards,
Errol
Dear Mark and Erroll
Wonderful things ! Have just scanned through the pictures will have a read later tonight.
Thanks for posting
$400 to $24,000 not a bad capital gain plus the enjoyment of looking a beautiful object can't ask for more than that.
Regards
Michael
Hi Errol and Michael and others.
The black russet feature that appears pretty much with Siberian jade but not exclusively with said. It is a very bright jade with black russet features.
At the turn of the 20th century the availability of large jade rock deposits were heavily depleted. This led to the discovery of said Siberian holdings sufficed the growing need. I posted awhile back a 4 plaque items depicting the four seasons with a very informative essay. That sold in excess of 1.4 million
Josh from Chamberlain antiques in his last sale had a very nice example that sold quite well.
Looking at and or appraising Jade from one low quality picture is nearly impossible.
I have started this thread in order for members to express their thoughts/collection that they own or in contemplating of buying.
Please don't be put off by the sum I paid. Back in the 80's I was a very well known pawnbroker and bought some stunning items.
The pictures I posted prior are from 1.2 mp camera. I did try to upload another being a 20th century merrian statue. Stunning example of a grey/white piece. However the pic I took made it look deep lavender which it is not.
I am very sorry that the pictures I posted have in essence been trashed as worthless items with blogs suggesting they are fake.
I am not able to post enhanced pictures as I do not own said camera and more importantly I am very sick ATM and have been told not to handle items in fear that I drop said.
For what it is worth,Errol I do like yr lidded vessal and would have been very comfortable in saying early 20th century.
I may also add that I am a fully qualified gemologist.
Five people can look at x and u will probably get 5 different views/opinion set

Dear Mark,
I am sorry to hear that you have not been well, and I hope you make a full recovery in due course.
For my part, my view about appraisal is quite simple, and I believe it to be indisputable: the plain fact of the matter is that you are a qualified gemologist. Only some other similarly qualified gemologist, if indeed there be any such on this Forum, would be entitled to debate your view.
Let me also say that posting images that do not do complete justice to the item depicted are always in peril of attracting an ill informed response.
Speedy recovery,
Alan
Dear Mark,
Thank you first for starting this thread. I'm sorry to hear that you are ill. I wish you recover very soon.
And I hope you can buy a new camera for better pictures somtime. ?
I'm very interested in your collection. You must have a lot of amazing things.

Thank you Xin and Alan much appreciated. The meds I am on make me very dozy and shaky. I cannot wait until the virus is gone.
It appears that I have fallen victim to my own advice. Post only HD/clear pics or you will inevitably find a mixed reaction.
I will of course in due time purchase a appropriate camera along the lines that Peter has advised via his website.
I hope other readers will share their Jade, good or bad so that we can all further ourselves with knowledge.
That is why I started this thread. Even though it is a very difficult subject that remains more subjective rather than objective.
I have known many a dealer in jade to try online assessment which has not ended well. It is extremely difficult to determine age when it is in your hands, let alone just by a picture. Especially if that picture is low quality and secondly if the colour is distorted.
A mine field!
Mark
So sorry you are unwell, Mark. Viruses can be terrible, often unexplained, things. I do hope you feel better soon. I really enjoy your comments on Jades and will look through the pdf over coffee this morning. Thank you!
Hi all,
I have up loaded this file from a jade producing company.
Although more than 35 pages long it does show the increasing demand along with the ever increasing prices.
Supply and demand as Xin pointed out early. New carving especially if from genuine mutton fat are just mind blowing as depicted by the white jade. Vase price!
Master carvers are numerous throughout Asia but their services do not come cheap.
Mark
Dear Mark:
I hope you feel better today.
Thanks for the post. You have given me a lot of homework to do! I'll look forward to reading the file.
Regards,
Errol
The Marchant jade collection.
The previous post on modern jade made items is real eye opener with respect to price. If any readers have doubts simply go to eBay. Type in Jade, worldwide and click on highest price p&h.
You will see # of jade dealers offering their items for really-way-out prices. And they are very serious with said prices.
Didn't really at first believe/understand. That is until I looked into deeper.
With the rise in wealth throughout China comes the want to own beautiful status symbols such as fine Jade, fine art, antique ivory(a real status symbol),rhino horns and many more.
