Hi all,
I was following this box on ebay, not because I intended to buy it but because I knew I'd seen it somewhere before. After a little detective work I found that the salt had been sold at auction in the UK in Oct 2018. It made £380. A month later, it pops up on ebay and makes just £112!
It's very curious!
Nic
Hi,
How interesting, clearly the same box. Maybe it didn't really sell (I see quite a bit of that locally) or perhaps the buyer didn't pay (an issue with online bidders, I am told) and they stuck it on ebay instead? Who is the ebay seller? I see they are in Yorkshire.
JUlia
The eBay seller is old.masters.antiques if the buyer at local auction didn’t pay, it’s funny that the under bidder(s) also wasn’t interested. Very frustrating for the seller. Also very disappointing to go from £300 to £100.
Nic
I wonder what the estimate was in the original sale? I have seen an auctioneer artificially bid an item up to the lower estimate and then pretend it sold when it didn't; in fact sometimes I doubt there are any bids at all: you see the audience looking around blankly to see who he is taking bids from.
Also, I'm not sure every auctioneer offers the item to the next highest bidder, my local ones have post-sale catalogues of one kind or another. One place told me, when I asked about the number of supposedly sold items reappearing in the post-auction sale, that if you bid online but have not actually seen the item in person, then you are under no obligation to buy it.
I can only guess that this is the way the auction house referred to above disposes of items that have not sold.
I think this is just a case of the dealer buying at a local auction , and then reselling on ebay, at a loss.
£380 would be very expensive for this , imo, even though it's a nice thing.
tam
Dear NicDan, tam18 and Julia,
I think that the various scenarios you suggest are each equally possible explanations of what's occurred in this case. The item might have been bought at auction for the purposes of reselling on eBay as tam18 suggests (in this case, at a loss for the original auction buyer), or as Julia suggests, there may be some offloading of unsold or unpaid for auction lots onto eBay to give them a second airing there instead. I know from my own experience of other instances where both of these scenarios were most certainly in play.
It is interesting to note the price fluctuation of an item according to the context of its sale. This phenomenon has been known for a long time, of course, though I confess it still continues to surprise me on those occasions when the discrepancy in results is extreme.
Best wishes,
Alan
Thanks everyone for the suggestions!
If this is a case of buying local to sell online, the dealer must be kicking himself that he didn’t put a reserve on this! This must’ve been around £360 with commissions etc.
It’s possible that the seller will conveniently ‘not be able to find’ the item and cancel the sale? This has happened to me on eBay... twice!
Anything is possible in the mystical world of auctions!
Nic
If you see it pop up again on ebay in a short while it would be a shill gone wrong and the dealer still has it. He'll be scratching his head as to what to do. If it did sell at auction originally that is a ludicrous price to pay for that piece. I can't imagine a dealer making that error so the false sale record theory has weight here. Best wishes
