@greeno107 Found this just doing a quick search which mentions the Qi Baishi and another one: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-art-sothebys/sothebys-says-disputed-8-2-million-chinese-scroll-is-authentic-idUSBREA0D0JN20140114
Very interesting story regarding that jade seal traveling upwards through the marketplace. I have to admit that I know absolutely nothing regarding the dating of jade pieces; having never collected in that area. Otherwise, it seems this object followed a fairly traditional pathway through a small, regional venue with limited resources and ultimately landed in an international auction with an audience of fabulously wealthy bidders . In between those auctions , I am sure that jade seal was carefully studied, global experts consulted, scientific analysis performed, and it’s history vetted before that item was placed before Sotheby’s carefully cultivated bidders.
The odds are that the original owners did not have the knowledge or experience to get their jade seal under the noses of the right people that could gain them entrance to that rarified world. In this type of quest, there are a thousand people who say ‘no’ and only one person who can say ‘yes’.
This is the longquan bowl I had on my radar screen. I just coincidentally came across it while doing some online searches. Sale ends today but so far no one has bid the $200 opening bid. The blue glaze and the iron spots makes the bowl more interesting but I'm probably not going to bid on it since after all there is no guarantee of authenticity when buying from the online auction site where it is available.
That is a very attractive bowl ‘in the style of’ a Longquan Song wine cup. I have attached a close up of the base of my cup for comparison.
Notice that the paste is grayish in color and also how the clay comes to a point on the base.
The orange-colored foot ring is correct and very typical for longquan ware. It looks particularly nice in combination with a blue glaze. The color comes from iron-oxide formed in the kiln. It is white underneath as you can see on some of the examples in the link provided.

For clarification - I was talking about the tobi seiji style bowl for $200

Hello Collectingasia
Just to add a bit more to the discussion regarding ‘tobi seiji’, I have attached some photographs of my celadon bottle with iron spots. I purchased it as a Yuan dynasty piece, but due to the glaze and how the spots have burnt into the body I think that it may be older.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Hi Jeremy,
The previously shown tobi seiji pieces were really not of a comparable type to this piece. Provincial pieces such as the one you have shown conform less to "specific types, styles, and shapes" and I really don't specialize in them. For example, the pair of vases above at Christie's - the design is intentional. I can't say that about your vase. It could be intentional... or it could be due to poor quality glazing/firing techniques. It may also not even be Chinese. It's not something I have time to devote to studying for provincial pieces.
In terms of collection, for appreciation or investment, you want to be closer to pieces of this type

...refined in terms of color, potting, and decoration. Every part of the process was under a greater degree of control and mastery.
Kind regards.

Hello Collectingasia
Thank you for the link.
I agree with you that my bottle doesn’t have the finesse of the Yuan pieces. I have found that the iron spots decoration on celadon ceramics seems to have originated during the Eastern Jin period. An example is in the Beijing Palace Museum

Kind regards,

Below are links to another two pieces in the Palace Museum collection from the Eastern Jin period.

So that by the Yuan dynasty the Chinese potters had been able to refine the effect of the iron spots from the earlier provincial pieces.
Kind regards,
Jeremy

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
