Hi All,
For buyers out side of the USA and the UK beware of sellers who use Ebays Global Shipping program. You will be charged the postage plus another fee that you can't see the full amount until you are at check out. Buyers in Australia note if you elect to have items sent in wooden packaging and customs spot it you may be up for fumigation costs. These fumigation costs can also be applied to any item made from Animal or plant based materials regardless of the packaging material or age of the item. Life was not meant to be easy I suppose.
As an example the two Hoi An items from this seller are not over priced. The shipping is not exactly cheap but not to bad for two items plus packaging. But there is another charge that is indicated at about $50.00 but could change at check out. I would be charged 10% gst on the whole amount so it is not viable for me.
Michael
Yes I see what you mean. To Europe it would be $77 shipping costs and another $93 for some unclear import fees. That’s quite hefty but can be easily overlooked.
It actually happened to me when I bought a silver spoon in the US earlier that year. I saw the fees only in checkout and couldn’t go back anymore. They were not that high though and I experienced a most pleasant shipping with perfect tracking. It was delivered in less than a week without me having to pick it up from customs.
Birgit
Hello Birgit and Michael:
I think buying items at major and regional auctions houses is fraught with financial pitfalls. It is all very well to describe an item that goes for a particular hammer price as a "steal" or a "bargain" as some do. However, when the auction house fee, the shipping costs and miscellaneous costs add up to 80 to 150 percent of the hammer price of the item, where is the value then?
Also, regarding Customs and import duties, the situation in the USA is that United States law makes items older than 100 years exempt from import duties. It would therefore seem to be a logical step for sellers and auction houses to provide a certificate for Customs purposes validating that the item is an antique as defined under US law. However, very few, if any, do so. Indeed, their web pages always contain a disclaimer that the item might be subject to import duties. I don't know what applicable laws are in Australia and the UK regarding importation of antiques. However, I think for the USA, sellers and auction houses should not leave buyers in the position of having to prove to US Customs that the item is truly an antique and therefore not subject to import duties.
Errol
Dear Erroll,
that of the import duties must be seen on both sides.
USA is exempting duties for antiques, but for example here in Italy we can’t export antiques without a license that requires months for having be released, besides the complication in having it. So we can’t declare something as being antique, or it will be quite complicate to export it.
Said that, I agree with most of what has been said in this and the other thread related to Catawiki.
The major auction houses are not living on Earth, they think that everybody has the same pocket of Mr. Bezos.
As for myself, I have stopped to sell on eBay since about one year, I think. It is no more possible, most not honest buyers there, fully covered and stimulated by eBay policy, which in my opinion it is illegal.
They are not protecting the buyers, they are stimulating them to steal things.
I am waiting for the new venue announced by Peters, I hope that it will be ready soon.
Regards,
Giovanni
Dear Giovanni:
Nice to hear from you again. Yes, I know that an export permit is required for antiques in some countries. I had not realized though that it was so arduous and time-consuming to obtain one. I thought that is was more of a formality.
Your post makes me realize how difficult it is to buy antique Asian art these days. As you say eBay has a lot of problems, but they still seem the best platform for honest buyers if one has enough knowledge to avoid their very large percentage of fake items. Catawiki has huge problems in communication and ensuring delivery and the major auction houses extract so many fees that one has to double or triple the hammer price to arrive at a cost estimate of what winning at item might be when one bids.
I too hope that Peter's projected new platform will overcome most of these issues. The problems are clear cut and apparent to all. A new platform should be able to avoid at least some of them.
Best regards,
Errol
