Looks Arita to me, is it a beetle on the head of a long necked turtle?🐢

Looks good to me, too. Very nice. Where did you find that piece?

@sharonp @julia

At an estate sale. Sadly, it's cracked so I need to be careful with it. It's going on my kitchen wall next to the other kraak & pseudo-kraak ware.

Yeah, Sharon, I'm not sure what that is. It does look like a beetle, doesn't it? I'll have to look up its symbolism.

@steve

Yes, Arita and in that time period. Often mistaken for Chinese, but the clean bottom with the large circle around the rim are Japanese features. A nice find (pacific Heights?)

@gfhandel
Hi George,

I found it in Atherton, the estate of an antique dealer. The consigner seems to be a bit overwhelmed trying to price everything. They already had a sale last month but just for the jewelry. Later this month there is another sale and then another in March for the "stuff in the garage". We met the new owners of the house (a grand old 1905 mansion) and they can't wait for all the stuff to be out so they can really begin to refurbish (they are keeping the historic finishes, thank goodness).

Regards,

Steve

@steve

Steve, I have read on the Gotheborg forum about using paraloid to stabilize cracks. I would like to use it on a couple of pieces but haven't tried it yet. It is described as, “Paraloid B72, a very stable, easily reversible acrylic resin,” and is supposed to be very easy to use. Perhaps someone on the forum has experience with it and could offer advice to all of us.

I don't know what Paraloid is, to secure cracks I use something that's called 1-second-glue. I take the liquid variety and let it sip into the crack. You have to hold the pieces by adhesive tape (front and back) in the correct position before, because no correction is possible after glueing. When it's dry after 24 hours or so I remove any outside traces with a fine scalpel or acetone.

Thank you, Birgit. I have a couple of pieces with hairlines that I would like to stabilize. Since Steve mentioned that his plate is cracked, I thought that forum members might have helpful suggestions that could benefit many of us.

I can't help with repairs, but I was wondering if what Sharon asked about was a beetle on a type of lingzhi fungus ?

@steve An Atherton estate sale, a good source, hope you can find more items for your collection. I am in San Mateo along Alameda so close by.

@gfhandel HI George,

They're having their sale this weekend and then again in March. If you're interested, I can share more info.

How are you these days? Would be wonderful to have lunch some Saturday.
