@ming1449 Stuart I notice all the authentic vases have a purplish tone but the vase offered for discussion is a more blue tone. Is this just a lighting issue?
Hi Brian -
The cobalt used during the Jiajing period was a mixed mixture of imported ‘Huiqing’, (sometimes referred to as Mohammedan blue) and domestic ‘Shizi Qing’(pebble blue) material. This produced the rich purple/blue colour seen on Imperial wares ...
This mixture continued to be used throughout the Longqing and early Wanli periods but, when stocks of the imported type became exhausted and were no longer available, it was replaced by another domestic cobalt named ‘Zheliao’, which was mined in Zhejiang province, and produced a clear greyish/blue tone seen on mid/late Imperial Wanli pieces ...
The glaze on all should exhibited a slightly blueish, clear tone especially on the base as seen on the sixth image posted ...
Stuart
Hi Pietro -
Both the Yuan yuhuchunpings are modern fakes ...
The painting style, although somewhat better on the faceted vase is better, is far to stiff and mechanical drawn when compared to authentic examples ...
Attached image for comparison of an eight faceted ewer, H. 23.6 cm, excavated from a hoard at South Yonghua Road, Baoding, Hebei Province in 1964 ...

Stuart, as always, I feel I learn so much from your posts. Thank you for all the explanations you give and pictures you provide.
Like everyone, I have seen a lot of copies of these types of jars. There were often ming and yuan style pieces at the small local auction where I used to live. I got to realise they were copies because they usually either went for peanuts or didn't sell, so I stopped paying attention to them. It would be nice and rather exciting if this turned out to be real, especially if it was only described in a rather noncommittal way.
Julia,I would agree, it would be nice to see some one make good on a small local auction. I gives us all hope.
Ron
Hi Julia, Rom, Pietro and all -
Just to clarify the production and overall quality of Wanli pieces ...
The firing of imitation Chenghua official wares commenced in the late Ming, starting from the Jiajing and Wanli reigns ...
The Wanli Emperor had great love of both Xuande and Chenghua period ceramics, and placed orders for copies to be made of such wares ...
With a desire to replicate these official Xuande and Chenghua pieces, meticulous effort was taken at the Imperial kilns in perfecting various aspects such as the clay body, glaze, cobalt pigments and painting styles ...
These imitation XD/CH pieces are very different to general Wanli imperial wares, which are normally heavily potted and have defects, such as unevenness in the bodies, finishing, glaze and painted styles ...
As to this particular Wanli jar posted by Pietro, a number of other images, including close ups, would be required before anything could be said ...
As mentioned by Ron, very difficult to draw any conclusions based on just two images ...

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink.
