This is another of my imperial quality vase, marked Hongxian (Yuan Shikay) 1915-1916
Famille rose colour palette
Yuor opinion?
Many thanks
We will need closer images of the script and enamel + foot base to comment correctly. I see these nicely done pieces a lot. They are hand painted and printed together. Your vase could either be a republic piece or a modern vase. Better picture and other members will comment. I do like the the white glaze.
There has been a lot of debate as to whether or not any genuine hongxian porcelain was ever produced during the very short reign lasting only 83 days.
It's my opinion that it's highly unlikely that pieces were made. Rather they appeared during the 1920's and 1930's and attributed as genuine. But this is just my opinion. I have seen some very convincing small pieces but never a large vase.
The vase posted is very nicely painted but it's my opinion that it is not hongxian. Nor is it republican period. Rather it's a product of the later part of the 20th century. I see no evidence of soft flaws but that may be due to the poor images.
You will note that the colours are very bright. The shading is non exitant. The general look is rather stiff and not fluently painted. All of the above you would expect to see on any genuine imperial porcelain regardless of the reign.
Better pictures are needed of the base and inside if possible.
Mark
@imperialfinegems Many thanks for the precious information.
yes, the vase arrives next week, I take the photos and send them
@shinigami aka Birgit is also very good with early 20th century porcelain. Hopefully she will chim in with her thoughts.
Hongxian marked porcelain is very popular atm. And highly sought after. Hence the market place for copies etc. I have only ever seen a couple plaques that could have been made during this reign.
If you compare the quality with say guangxu period 1875-1908 imperial vases you will quickly see what I am trying to explain to you.
Imperial porcelain was made to the very highest standards. There were no rooms for errors or quickness of the hand.
Did you buy this as a genuine example or was it simply offered as piece bearing the mark?
You could also submit this to Peter's identification section. It's a very small fee of I think $10-15.
Mark
I am in agreement with Mark a few things seem to lead to a later date. The design and overall presentation is strange. The pink color enamel I’m seeing all over the internet. The handles look off. I actually think the shading is nicely done. Did you by it from a credible source with providence? All these clues help understand your item.
It's a nicely done vase but as Mark said neither Hongxian nor Republic but modern. I once fell into the Hongxian trap myself when buying a 1930s brush washer with that mark. The mark was used early on and is even more used today due to the huge demand. What kept me from falling into the trap again was a little book: "A Discourse on Hung Hsien Porcelain" The author has collected some authentic pieces and you clearly see that they belong to a certain style. Though they are of high quality most of them depict groups of people in a typical early Republic style. Neither the form nor the decoration are fantastic or fanciful. The book is still available for little money.
Birgit
That looks an interesting book.
For what it is worth, I also think this is rather fanciful modern copy. I am becoming very suspicious of an over-use dots. There have been a few questionable pieces recently that share that characteristic. It feels like a cheap and easy filler of space by someone who is not sure what else to use.

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
