Hi everyone! I am in need of some help identifying the mark on the bottom on my Yixing dragon vase. The vase is 24" tall X 5-3/8" Wide (top), 5-3/4" foot rim and 10" wide in middle. It appears to be older but we all know that looks can be deceiving! As always, I appreciate everyone's input!!

Hi Jessica,
I could be wrong, but I think this vase is actually a Japanese Tokoname vase rather than Chinese Yixing. I can't say anything as to age.

Thanks John. I am not familiar with Tokoname so that at least gives me something to research. I appreciate the knowledge. We use it for our umbrellas 🙂 Jessica
I love it! I'd be too afraid to use it for umbrellas, though. Hopefully, someone else could chime in on age or origin. I really like the depiction of the dragon. It looks pretty powerfully modeled.

I agree with John. It's in my opinion Japanese. But I am also unsure of what the age is.
I certainly would not be using it as a umbrella stand.
Nice piece. Love the dragon among waves. Possibly looking for the flaming pearl (I can't see one in your images).

it migth be Zhuni or Hongni Clay .. Yixing is the name of the region where this wares of Zhuni clay are made not the Clay itself ...please dont use it for umbrellas anymore .

i just did some more research on clay it cannot be Zhuni Clay because the shrinking rate while firering would be to big and the pot would crack so it most probably hongni
Good morning everyone and thank you so much for the info! Update, umbrellas have been removed. My husband was laughing at me when I took them out this morning. His words were, "I told you not to use it for umbrellas." Also, there are only 3 visible feet and none of them are holding a pearl. Any idea what the mark says on the bottom?

I do not know Japanese, nor do I know much about Tokoname.
Here's my crack at the mark in the meantime while we wait for others who know more to see:
The middle column looks to be dai nippon, or made in Japan, 大日本
The right most column looks to read tokoname, 常滑. The last character isn't clear to me from the picture, but I assume that is what it reads.
The left-most column could be an artist name? I can't tell what the top left character reads, but the bottom looks like the last character of the Kutani mark, 谷, although I doubt it's referencing Kutani. Could be __tani.
I'm going to tentatively believe this vase is from the first half of the 20th century. From the gotheborg website:
"It is generally accepted that marks that includes "Dai Nippon" in Japanese characters on the whole date to the Meiji (1868-1912) period, reflecting the greatly increased nationalism of that period. However, in stamped versions it also occurred on mass produced export wares well into the 1930s."

I was confused by the marks "Dai Nippon" marks being in the middle, so I automatically thought reproduction. Is it common for Japanese characters to be written in that orientation?

John is absolutely right. The Dai Nippon mark was used right up to the 30's.
The only difference I believe is that the later ones tended to be read left to right. Meiji right to left.
