@clayandbrush Your explanation makes good sense.
If the center collapsed, it would collect the grit, perhaps even in a perfect circular mound. However, I don’t see a collapsed center in the photos.
I did asked to know if the plate sits level for this very reason.
If it sits level, then it could be as you describe - a collapsed center.
However, if the center grit caused the plate to tilt, the logical explanation is that the grit was added to deceive, and they added too much.
Best we see s few more photos.
@jbeer2121 Would you be so generous as placate me just a little and post a profile photo of the top and bottom of the plate?
I would be very interested in seeing if the plate collapsed as proposed in the theory about the center patch if grit.

Perhaps I’m the only one in this group who has never seen an authentic kraak object with that much grit. It’s also very large grit…. Looks like pretzel salt… How do I get myself wrapped into stuff like this?

Tim I agree with you. My first reaction was: fake. Because of the strange distribution of the grit and also its color. Usually the grit is greyish while this one looks like out of a bag from the DIY store. But the front looks ok and they produced them in so many places that it might indeed be unusual but authentic.

Here’s a fake Swatow bowl that was posted to Asianart.com
Not the same pattern of grit distribution, but you can see the excessiveness of the grit, the clustering, and the pretzel salt look to the grit.
And, no indication of a collapsed center.
But, yes, I see the kraak bowl’s warped form, crack, surface scratches, and color cobalt all look very much of the period.
The distribution of grit in this example is simply stupid. If anywhere it should be at the foot rim.

I appreciate the debate, always... I learn a lot from when you and @clayandbrush disagree. I think the dish collapsed, I tried to show it the best I could. It does not sit level, mostly the slightly cupped shape makes it wobbly. I hope the photos help show what I mean.

Sorry all for the delay in my responding... running through estate sales. Nothing good unfortunately, Just a box of late sixties early 70's playboys.... I get why people say they read them for the writing, Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Ralph Steadman art.... dayum I feel spoiled, and of course beautiful women(don't hate me).

@jbeer2121 This photo is telling to me for two reasons:
The center of your plate is convex, not concave. How does a plate collapse up?
And, slip is awfully shiny for a 500 year old export plate.
I may have read incorrectly, but I think I saw that Qing copies of Kraak ware were made.
I’m out of ammo, so, that’s it. I surrender!
