Came upon this today and I have very little knowledge of coral. The dealer claims this is the real deal old red stuff, not something dyed. It seems to be a piece of coral presented in sort of a scholars stone way, in it's natural state as a display piece. If authentic, is this something potentially rare and valuable, or would it be something fairly common? Thanks for any insights you can provide. I'm trying to decide whether or not to get it. Also, how does one authenticate if coral is real and whether or not it has been dyed, etc? John
DO NOT BUY! This is not old growth deep water red coral. It may be dyed, but regardless, it has little value.
Are you looking for red coral? I have a box of pieces that had been in one of my client’s storage units since 1970.
@johnshoe There are some online articles, the real stuff does not look so clunky.
@johnshoe Here is one my figures made from red coral, about 10 inches tall, a bag of fragments of jewelry quality coral, and one of the drags with some oil on it to show what it would look like polished up.
@greeno107 Does that guy have a busted nose or is that just the lighting?
Is real coral quite heavy, because this piece was.
It is real coral, but definitely dyed. Very, very common, and no value.
@imperialfinegems It looks similar to farmed coral that was used to create coral barrel beads in the eighties and nineties, sometimes small pebbles entrapped in a crevase, also branch coral necklaces and bracelets that were popular in Florida. Since they were farmed in Asia (supposedly), you could wear them guilt free. The branch coral necklaces made a statement but were uncomfortable to wear. They were dyed. I'm going to look up coral farming and read about it this morning. Sharon
John, the coral you showed is bamboo coral, which is beige in its natural state and dyed red. Most coral farming is for reef replacement and for salt water acqauriums. The old porous white beads with lots of holes from the sixties jewelry is sponge coral (which are not sponges). Dead coral is harvested and apparently coral dust is being mixed with polymers to create some beads and fossil coral mostly from Tibet and Indonesia is being used for jewelry. Natural deep sea coral from the Mediterranean and off the coast of Japan is still being harvested but limits on harvesting have been put in place. One article titled Coral and Gemologists showed a very similar example as the bamboo coral you photographed in the shop. An article by Miss Scuba suggested that farmed coral for jewelry is a myth.
Well, at any rate, I'm glad I didn't spontaneously buy this for the $700 asking price. And I'm learning a little bit about coral. On a scale of 1-10, I'd say my previous understanding was at about 1, maybe. Now I'd say I've moved up to about a 2, maybe. In other words, it might be awhile before I buy anything coral. Cheers!
@johnshoe Congratulations on dodging that one, I hope the shop owner did not pay 350.00 for it, supposing his mark up to be 50%, because it is not worth 350.00. A lady who did some jewelry repair for me, showed me a cane made out of African malachite that she purchased from a refugee from Katrina that came into her shop, she and I both thought it had been dyed, but what the hey, it was charity, people had to get where they needed to get to safety. Lots of things showed up in auctions following Katrina, the only thing I bought at a silent charity auction was two signed prints from an New Orleans artist, last I checked, he ended up in New York, so still a working artist and still not commanding big prices, so it goes.
