Hello,
I think this is jade. Any tips on its age would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Vincent: I'm by no means an expert on jade. However, I doubt very much that this is a jade vase. The creamy color with orange or russet highlights suggest agate to me which is, of course, much less costly than jade. Although there is a very slight pinkish hue I don't think this is Rose Quartz either. I have a vase very similar to this in Rose Quartz but that has a definite pink color. All of this notwithstanding this is an attractive item. I like these although some may find them on the kitschy side. As far as age is concerned, I think this is likely a contemporary item or less likely of the Republican period. My Rose Quartz vase (see attachment) has a very similar stand. The stand is lovely, but I think it too is probably contemporary. If I'm wrong I'll be pleased because my vase was sold to me as a late Qing vase although I didn't believe it. I paid about $400 for it.
Kind regards,
Errol
Hi Vincent,
It's an agate vase, not Jade. 20th C. export.

Xin: I'm glad you agree with me on this. I think the russet highlights definitely point to agate and I also agree that it's a contemporary item.

Errol

I agree with the posts by Xin and Errol.
No way this is Jade! Agate/hard stone crystal at best. Agate has the same russet that appears to be either brown or orange
Errol your pink crystal vase is nice and is older than the one that is the subject of this tread.
Mark
Dear Vincent,
Heed the opinions of the members who have already expressed them on your vase. Mark in particular has a developed understanding of jade, and his opinion here counts for a lot.

Alan
Mark:
Many thanks! I'm pleased you like my presumably Rose Quartz vase and think it's older. Since I paid only about $400 for it and since I rather like it, I was not too concerned. However, if you think it is possibly of the Republican period that would add to my enjoyment of the vase.
Kind regards,
Errol
Hi Errol
Liking an item is more than a reason to buy something.
You can rest assure that your vase is in my opinion from the republic period based on the carving, style and the wood base.
It certainly is without doubt a superior quality carving compared to the other vase which is grotesque and dates from the 60/70s onward.
These Crystal vases have in more recent times been featured with the likes if Bonham's and Christies just to name 2.
Mark
Hi Mark:
Thank you! You have really made my morning! I agree with you about liking items being a good enough reason to buy them. However, when they are relatively recent I tend to regard them as being somewhat inferior which is I think somewhat silly.
Yes the agate vase was over the top and as I mentioned was really kitschy. The color of the crystal was very dull apart fom the russet tones in the flowers.
Best regards,
Errol
Hi Mark:
I did not bid on this supposedly serpentine vase offered at auction this evening by Chamberlain Antiques (juice 1499) on eBay. SEE LINK. It has a similar decoration to my Rose Quartz vase shown above and to the agate vase that started this thread. It sold for $550. I was wondering what you thought of the vase and of serpentine in particular as a medium. I thought the color was on the weak side, but it's not unattractive. The vase measures 10 inches without the stand and is described as mid-twentieth century .
Regards,
Errol
Hi Errol,
Thank you for the post. I saw this on Josh's website. Generally speaking serpentine is the poor man's version of jade. It is a hard material.
I agree with the age mid 20th century.
Your vase is a pink quartz much better in carving and is desirable for its own merit.
Many unscrupulous sellers on eBay more often than not sell serpentine as real jade quoting that the surface can't be scratched and all that. Hard serpentine is close to jades hardness.
If I had a choice between yours and the other u would have no hesitation in picking yours.
I did buy the fukagawa vases from Josh for $1136.
I missed out on the 2 jade plaques, the white jade dog and the bowl with mottled russet features.
The vases are superb and very sought after. This is my first purchase from him.

Hi Mark:
Thanks for your comment and information. Yes I imagine a contemporary jade item of this size would sell for several thousand dollars?
Which are the fukagawa vases that you won? I only looked at some items in the auction and I'm not familiar with the term "fukagawa." Sorry you missed out on the jade pieces. I would suspect that you know the true value of such items and don't bid higher than that whereas less informed buyers bid more than the items are worth on the market and therefore win them. I'm sure though that more will come along later for you to consider. I have sometimes been disappointed in losing out on an item that I wanted only to be glad I lost it later on when I came across a much better item of the same type.
Kind regards,
Errol
The vases were the slim gold rims and bottom with bamboo. They are highly sort after if they have no damage. Can't link said with this phone have to use a laptop.
I only bought them because one I liked them and two they were sold way under market value.
I would have liked the Jade but they all went for reasonable to good prices. It is the dealer in me that decides yes or no. His estimate in age on the Jade was very conservative.
I really liked the two bowls from the 17th century with rare wooden tops and bottom. They were stunning. Not sure his much they sold for yet.
I will post pics of the vases I bought later.
The jade on offer was OK but not worth losing sleep over. The two plaques were the closet I got to buying as I was the under bidder. Nice early 20th century with original nice stands.
