Hi,
It is our local auction, too, this week and as usual I need a little hand-holding. ? ?
First thing is this jar and cover described as Song with an estimate of about £400. It is over 30 inches high. I have no experience of these items, but I find this attractive, I probably wouldn't bid on it anyway, but I want to look at it and would prefer to have some idea as to whether or not I am handling the genuine thing. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!
Hi Julia,
As usual unable to make a constructive comment. Think you will find if it is from the Song on auction day by how many zero's come on top of the 400 pounds estimate.
Michael
Or whether it is still available in the post-sale catalogue! ?
It is a funerary urn, as far as I know. There are some examples in Anthony Allens book on Ancient Chinese porcelains. Unsure if this is old or not :S

Considering the footrim and the stiffness of the decoration, I would say this is a copy.

Thanks Michael! Those ones are lovely. How did they get all the bones in and did they wait for the body to decompose or remove the bones from the recently dead person?
Just thinking about it, I feel a fake would be preferable to the real thing. At night, when it's dark, my imagination goes into overdrive!

"That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die."
I imagine that they burned the body, and whatever was left was put into these urns. I'm trying to find some confirmation online about this.

I think I will have a search later, too, when I am back from looking at it. It is so interesting!
Thank you!
Here is some information on Bonham's, this sounds bette - grain for the dead. Maybe *bones* came from a bad translation. I think I could happily live with one, after all. The foot doesn't look right on this one, though. I had a quick look at the jar and picked up the lid (surprisingly light), quite an impressive piece - a pair would be lovely.

Hi Julia -
These funerary jars used to fetch a lot a money years ago - especially pairs - but in recent years the price has fallen, and such pieces were never popular with Chinese buyers.
I would agree with Micheal, from the images this is copy - the applied decoration and foot are wrong, IMO ...
Stuart
Julia,
One issue with these I see is that they are tall and slender with lots of appendices. If you are to purchase one how would you safely display it? All about center of gravity (my cat Humphrey would be all over it). Another thing, these seem to have been plentiful, or copies were in the early 20th century, and many were converted to lamps and are seen in Hollywood movies. If I were looking for one I think it may be better to find one a bit smaller than yours for stability and display.
George
Ah George, great minds etc ... the first thing I thought of when I saw it in real life was how impractical it would be in my house! It looked so unstable, I thought it would be on the floor within a week! ?
Thanks for confirming, Stuart. The foot did look wrong but I wanted to learn something and I have! ?
