Hi everyone,
my local auction has a lot of Asian lots this week, but most of them are dreadful. Would like to ask for your assistance with a few of the items which I’m curious about (not necessarily thinking of buying) but interested in knowing how accurate my assessment is.
Pair of jars. Trying to be transitional but late 19th century? There’s also some doubt over their grubbiness. Is it too contrived? Are they later?
This next one looks to be trying to be 19th century with a Kangxi mark? But it looks kind of Japanese? Don’t know why I think this!
No idea about these. glaze looks quite thin? But I have no experience with this type of ware.
Thanks again, as ever
Nic
I think the jars are kangxi revival (late 19th century or 20thC copies, the foot pics are a little blurry), the palette, IMO, looks more like famille verte than transitional. They are decorative, how big are they?

Hi Michael,
thank you, I’m not sure, I’m hoping to view tomorrow.

I have to say, that the more I look at them and how they are decorated (some of it looks very sloopy), I think it is more likely that they are 20thC.
Hoping someone more knowledgeable can either correct or confirm.

Yes, I was thinking the same.
Here is what it should probably look like, if the quality was good: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Small-Antique-Chinese-Porcelain-Planter-Bowl-with-Birds-and-Flowers/202678434858?hash=item2f30937c2a:g:i1gAAOSwsEBc2b9o

The foot rim of the lidded jars make me think they’re modern. I would also pass the blue and white vase.
Birgit
Thanks Birgit, yes, I’m veering in that direction too. It will be interesting to take a closer look later today.
Thanks very much.
Nic
I agree. As for the Shiwan-style jars, I'm not sure and would want to handle them. I had one once and it was quite hard to date accurately (esp for me) because they were made to a similar design over a wide time-scale with natural variations in the glaze colour. Because they are a traditional style, it may be easier to make newer ones that are successfully deceptive regarding age because the style automatically looks old.
Thanks Julia,
yes, the aged appearance always makes me jumpy. The fact that my auction house has provided more than one photo (they usually only give one) suggests that either someone has requested more photos (because they too are unsure) or the auction house thinks they *might* be genuine but do not want to commit to it in the written description which says ‘in the style of’!
Nic
Really hate that thing eBay does with the links.

Hi ND -
The enamels and painting style of two lidded phoenix jars look very new to me, and the blue/white vase is the same, IMO ...
From the single image, I would not like comment on the two green glaze glazed type jars, would need to see/handle ...
Enjoy the 'viewing' ...
Stuart
Hi everyone,
I did manage to get to the sale, it was my lunch hour so didn’t have time to wait for someone to open the cabinets. I didn’t mind too much because, in the flesh, they didn’t appear to be of quality. The painting was sloppy in several places and the colours insipid.
The blue and white vase looked new, as you say Stuart. It too did not appeal to me. The glaze on the green jars looked very thin, I’d always imagined it would be thicker? Don’t know if that’s the case.
The auction is tomorrow, I won’t be bidding on these, but there is some lovely silver, a box of great pottery and nice table that I will go for.
Thanks you all for your guidance,
Nic
Mine had a thick glaze that left drips around the foot rim.
Good luck, tomorrow!
Thanks Julia, that’s what I thought. I was expecting a treacle-like affair... albeit green treacle!
You, too, hope you bag some great things!
Nic
