Hi, just a neophyte here on this site, I am assuming these are Nyonya straits pottery. Is that correct, any advice regarding identification, dating, and or what this pattern or style is called would be most appreciated! thank you!
It has a jiaqing mark but it appears to be from the second half of the 19th C. I don't think it is Nyonya ware.
Thank you for the tip Springmeier, the mark matches, but must be a latter item, I think perhaps it is tongzhi porcelain.
A couple of very nice pieces you have posted.
In China at the same time they also made similar pieces to the straits for local consumption. Referred to as straits chinese porcelain.
Looks very much 2nd half of the 20th century. At the start of the 20th century through the Republic period most of these had a more bluish tinge. Rather than your bluish-turquoise.
Mark
Thank you Mr Adams, that helps to dial in the searching / comparable research effort.
Nice bowls. May I ask is the pink enamel bubbling? It looks like it. Also, is there grit on the footims and any trace of orange peel in the glaze?
My initial feeling is either Tongzhi or maybe Guangxu. My hesitation is that the sides are quite steep, the footrim rather high, and the blue interior seems a little off in colour and seems to have no wear. That could all be fine, hence my questions.
Julia
Mark did you say second half of the 20th century by mistake or do you think it’s modern? I agree with Julia, the bottom looks rather pristine with unusually steep walls but I would say late Qing early Republic. The shade of the turquoise color is a good clue but IMO different to apply on items on a the web. I use a calibrated monitor on my desktop but not on my phone and people take pictures under different light conditions.
Birgit
Hi Birgit and ajeet,
I meant to write 2nd half of the 19th century. Most certainly old pieces and not modern. Sorry about that. I normally re-read my posts etc.
Birgit is absolutely correct with the turquoise blue comment. Towards the end of the 19th century the glaze was predominantly turquoise-blue. Towards the end of the republican period it was more bluish.
Mark
Thank you for the comments and information. Those are rain drops on the center of the bowl as I took it outside to get the best possible natural light. To answer Julie's questions, yes there is some bubbling on the pink, yes to grit on the foot, but no to orange peel. The tone of the blue is in the turquoise range for sure.
Thank you Julia, kind of you to reply, if you happen to see this note, do know if these floral designs have a particular name or style attributed to them?
Birgit
I did not realize that they used the Jiaqing mark on items in the late 19C early 20C. It seems to always be the Kangxi, Qianlong and Yongzheng marks that are used. Does anyone have other examples of Jiaqing marks being used from that time to share? If so I'd love to check more examples. John
