Hi everyone, do you guys think these urns date to the gaungxu period? I appreciate any help you could lend me!

Here is the give away for me. Check out the flowers and leaves - They all have black line borders and are filled in with color. Guangxu pieces would not have these fill-ins. The artists had more skill then and would not produce something like these.

yes ,I agree, these are mid to late C20th pieces, very colourful but not artistically done .

Hello,
Can this be treated as a rule or there are exceptions? I find quite a lot Guangxu pieces with black rim on the decorations that are really nicely painted, so I just wonder if we can treat that hint as a criterion.

Can't provide any general rules, however on these examples the filled in black border lines were everywhere and the filled in colors were dull and lifeless (even though there were many colors present). Just didn't seem right.

Sometimes its just a matter of how the photos are taken. Those vases above were done with a flash - you could see that clearly. I say, take a good quality piece, shoot it with a flash and it's gonna look horrible. I agree those vases look like Xin said - after 1970. The thing I don't like the most about them is the composition - it looks like they tried to fill up empty space with any pattern they had. And of course, like others said the decorations look not that old.
Regarding examples, I don't have to look far for that 🙂 I have one in my stock, I bought it from ebay, listed as Guangxu and I have displayed it as a Guangxu as well, please have a look and advice me if that is a real one or not:

Comparing just the fish I can point out the difference, yet those vases above gave me second thought on my piece, what do you think?
I have found quite a lot of examples with black border lines on Bohnams' site (they upload much more photos than other houses I think) and completely without that line. Seams a matter of style of decoration:

I think it's interesting subject to explore. There is much higher chance for coming across a good Guangxu rather than anything older.

Dear Adrian,
your Guangxu fish bowl looks good to me (though any poor fish actually kept in this little pot would die soon). The pictures don't enlarge enough on my screen but there seem to be little bubbles in the pink and yellow. This effect can often be seen towards the end of the 19th century as in my Guangxu piece below (enlarge picture to see it).

Many thanks for that, interesting clue. I will inspect that later, I sell antiques during the weekends (if I am not tired too much after the whole week) and I have some of my stock packed up in boxes, so next time I get this bowl out I will inspect it better.
