what do you think? 18thC or 19thC?
The painting style, especially of the flowers, looks modern. Or could it be Japanese?
Birgit
Early Kangxi vase with a taste of Shunzhi.

I agree , this is probably kangxi, the cobalt blue is very good, the shape of the vase is nice, and the way the unglazed foot meets the glazed body at the base looks like a kangxi piece. The foot itself is dense and squared off slightly which is also typical.

Learned something new again! I had never seen these flowers before in old pieces.
Birgit
Dear Xin,
this time I am not convinced. The flowers, as said by Shinigami, are not typical of Kangxi.
The way of painting the rocks, leaves and grass is strange. The bamboo on the neck is painted in 19th century style.
The blue seems dark blurred. The paste looks not Kangxi.
I do not know what it is, it could well be Japanese as suggested by Shinigami; but since I know nothing about Japanese ware, let say that I don’t know what it is.
Giovanni
Thank you all for your input

Dear Giovanni,
In my opinion this an EARLY Kangxi piece, because in many points it has a lot of transitional/Shunzhi porcelain characters according to painting style.
About the bamboo style please see following lot (for me it's very characteristic):
About the leaves, you can find the similarity at following lot:
About the flowers:
The cobalt blue is wonderful. The foot rim is correct. The painting is full around the vase with big flowers and big leaves. All features tell me it's Kangxi piece.
Thank you for your comment anyway. It's nice to discuss with you ?

Thanks for the links , Xin. That Kangxi charger sold by Christies was wonderful , and also the three famille rose dishes were very fine too. But they dated those dishes to Kangxi , even though famille rose was introduced to porcelain production in the last few years of Kangxi's reign ... a little strange I feel. Surely these are later C18th?
Also , it's unusual to see the 6 character kangxi mark on export pieces made in the kangxi period , right?
Giovanni, do you remember that transitional sleeve vase that short dong posted in one thread, it was damaged and sold for about £100 in the end ? The decoration there reminded of the flowers on this vase, although I can't find the thread now .
tam
Hi Tam,
About famille rose you're right. Those plates are either late Kangxi or early Yongzheng, not really a big deal. Actually famille rose is the further development of famille verte due to extra white colour as background.
The one with 6 characters kangxi mark can also be porcelains ordered by rich families, namely for domestic markets. Export style porcelains are also sold on domestic markets.

Dear Xin,
you may be right, thank you. Interesting to see those bamboos and all the examples that you have shown.
You are also correct about the famille rose dishes, late Kangxi/Yongzheng.
For sure the vase has the strong presence that is so distinctive of Transitional ware. Since I have no knowledge about Japanese ware, every time I see something doubtful I suspect that it could be Japanese.
But at least on one point I am sure about what I see in those pictures, and it is the nice collection of AR (Acoustic Research) speakers that are on the background, haha. ?
Giovanni
Hi,
I could see this as possibly 19th c Japanese. The style of grasses on the neck is one reason and the mark on the base almost looks stenciled. Did you get this vase at the same time/place as that other one you asked about earlier with the willow tree and birds?
Best wishes,
Julia
