I need some help with reading the inscriptions on my ivory snuff bottle pls? I'm also not sure if it's Chinese or Japanese?

Welcome to the forum.Â
I think thats its also chinese and highly probable to be early republic period. However I would like to view the base to confirm if its ivory. Shregger lines are most prevalent at the base of carving.
Ivory carving that are Japanese have very elaborated and highly detailed bases. Chinese tend not to be.Â
Its a nice example. And if we find out the artist its even better. We have numerous members who are proficient in both Chinese and Japanese.
Hopefully its ivory, old and from a known artist.

Its a little bit blurry but I think it is genuine ivory. Its chinese in my opinion. Probably republican period 1912-1949. Circa 1920's. Could be late Qing period. So 1900-1920's. Its difficult to determine without knowing the artist etc. Nicely carved.Â
The decoration in ink is hand done and not by drill. Same with the calligraphy and seal mark. If it was drilled it would suggest a much later period. The two figures depicted look very much early 20th century in my opinion.Â
Ivory carving were very popular during the late 19th. The highlight of carving was in Hong Kong during the 60's & 70's.Â
Even though the Japanese were the true masters of ivory carving strangely chinese ivory is more expensive and sought after.Â
Let's hope someone chims in with a deciphering of the calligraphy. I would like to know the artist.Â
Please keep it in a non-heated area and regularly place a small cup of water near by to stop cracking.Â

What you said about the Japanese ivory carving masters is what made me doubt about whether it was Japanese or Chinese. I off course am convinced it is exactly as you described.Â
