Folks, this popped up on my arch feed today, advertised as Ming, some how I just don’t think so. I have never seen this type of decoration with the cobalt on the rim, the shape looks Ok to me but the jibberish signature under the rim and an artismo scroll to the interior just doesn’t work, going cheap though. Only dimension given is 2 3/4 tall.
Any thoughts to be shared.
Ron
As far as I can find from the Chinese websites, the mark is recent, nothing to do with Ming
I think it’s modern. I recently bought a tea cup from Aliexpress with the same pattern and look. Every time I encounter this pattern it’s on a modern piece. I vaguely remember having read that it was invented in the 1960s for a museum project.
Birgit
I have seen the blue rims before but interesting the mark is modern. I posted one on here ages ago. Will see if I can find it, although any pictures will be gone I expect.
Interesting about the museum project. If you remember anymore, Birgit, please let me know. 😊
@julia Unfortunately I am unable to find the museum story anymore. As far as I remember they tried to make porcelain in the old way (wood kiln etc.) for a museum project in the 1960s. A special pattern was designed for that occasion.
I found another mention and example in the book "Chinese Folk Painting on Porcelain". The author describes how he visited a replica kiln in Jingdezhen in 1985 and found two women painting porcelain with that pattern. They signed the bowl for him, ususally the bowl comes without the letters.
By the way, Aliexpress, where I bought my bowl, sells them as Cultural Revolution porcelain from the Jingdezhen old kiln factory.
Birgit
Thanks, Birgit that is interesting. I found my old thread but the pictures had gone. I still have some on the computer so I will try to compare the two.
I have just searched on Aliexpress, I can't believe all the cultural revolution stuff! Is that all new?
Yes of course. There's also a lot of Qing and Ming. Much of it is quite affordable, so I think the term "in the style of" is not known in the Chinese language and "antique" always means "antique looking". I have bought many tea cups and pots there, always great quality, much better than the stuff you find in Asia shops in Europe. If you always wanted a Ru ware dish as a fruit plate try this one from the "Chinese antiques store":

I was amazed at what is available. Makes me wonder how much is bought cheap then re-listed on ebay. I have seen a few of the cabbage decorated pieces, lots of watchers but no bids. Maybe I will check things I want to buy on aliexpress, just in case!
I think these are examples of Ming ceramics in the provincial category. The price is a little up there though:
I bought a couple bowls a while ago. This is a video that goes into some details:
Yes, these lovely fish dishes are really nice and sometimes found on the market. Shangrila Antiques is quite expensive, I've seen them offered for less. One day I would like to own one too.
Birgit
Russell, a very nice pair of dishes, the sort of thing I like to collect and can afford.
Thank you all for he input, I figured the bowl would be late Qing but never though they were as recent as the 60’s. Thanks for the extra effort in the research and a bit of history Birgit. At $20US I think I will pass.
