This discussion has been very helpful. Fake provenance, fake Chait label showing in a reasonable reputable auction house is good to know.

@zhtail no longer reputable if a auction house can not see that the letter has been photoshopped and uses it as providence it’s not reputable. This letter is a great study on photoshopping the signature is clearly under the type letters above it photoshop items always leave a edged pattern along the lines they could not clear the blue filled in the holes with the manipulation software and tried to contrast the threshold so a artificial black line was created under the signature. The main type is off center from the rest of the letter format. Also the photos from Brunks seem to be of very low pixels I believe on purpose. This item is a perfect study I guarantee more errors will come to light.

@zhtail The collection of I.M. Chait has gone through sales held by major auction houses almost a decade ago, and all pieces of value have essentially been repatriated to China.

Like all galleries, reproduction pieces were purchased in error during the 1990’s, and such pieces still float about with genuine labels.

So, I would not conclude that Brunk’s is deliberately selling forgeries, but tather that they simply lack the knowledge to be certain of authenticity, and as a business that profits from sales, are using the gallery label as evidence of quality and value - a false measurement of both.

Judge the piece.

@greeno107 so you think the Chait gallery label on the listed item is authentic? When did a bogus label give an item providence. This is the auction house baiting an inexperienced collector this is about profits and by design Brunks knows the letter is a fake and so is the label but still allowed the item to be listed as such this is the issue with Asian art we always are justifying bad behavior so why stop now producing fakes for Americans to buy.

@lotusblack

so you think the Chait gallery label on the listed item is authentic?

Yes, it is certainly possible. I.M. Chait , if I remember correctly, was running their own auctions on Liveauctioneers.com, and much of their inventory was lacking age/authenticity.

Regarding Brunks, I think you’re giving them too much credit for knowing the difference between genuine and reproduction porcelains/provenance.  I don’t think I need to point out that questionable pieces make it into the large auction houses, and they have teams of specialists.

I’ve never sold/bought through Brunks, but a good client of mine asked me to deliver a group of Chinese porcelains to their auction house in Asheville.

To my knowledge, while they sell Asian antiques, there was nobody in their staff who claimed to be an expert.

This is a matter that I can personally attest.

In 2016, I was told by the seller of a fantastic estate I attended that Brunk’s ‘appraised’ the contents prior to the sale, and removed all high end pieces to be sold at auction.  This was the sale I bought a damaged vase for $8 that I later sold for $2.2 million.

So again, yes, I think they just don’t know how to authenticate Chinese antiques, so they put a low estimate and plan to let the bidders decide.

@lotusblack

The damage was to the mouth, and did not extend into the enamel work.  The absence of a reign mark on the bottom of the mallet vase was probably why A) Brunks didn’t take it, and B) was probably why the vase did not sell in the tens of millions.

I sold it in Beijing with Johan Auction in December 2016

@zhtail

@zhtail Thank you. I’m not exactly sure what you mean by ‘you have great eyes’. I’m guessing you mean that I have a good eye for finding quality… not pretty eyes. LOL 😝

I can only say that I enjoy life, study everyday to better than the day before, share what I’ve learned, and hope to pass on my ‘great eyes’ to my granddaughter, who for now, likes to spend a few hours each week looking for treasures with her Grampa.

@henry-x Thank you! Of course I am so proud of my son, too, who has become a successful biologist (my first career), but my granddaughter is the jewel of my life - I’m so happy she enjoys being with her funny Grampa.

Sorry for all the photos. I’m traveling, so I haven’t seen her in over a week, so I guess I’m missing her.

@greeno107 I just want to clarify, you are talking about IM Chait in LA - the label and Chait Gallery they are referring to is Ralph Chait Galleries in NYC. They are totally different and not related. Ralph Chait is one of the best in the US, IM Chait is a scam and sell fakes.

Just wanted to clarify as I have seen this confusion before and they are in no way related.

I love the story with the damaged vase!
