I see a lot of attention being paid to the foot of the vessel, which would make a lot of sense if everything else was perfect about the piece.
However, this photo you posted (left) seems to show what I believe is a very telling aspect of the age and quality of the piece when compared to a genuine Kangxi famille verte brush pot sold by Christie's (right).
Look at the rendering of the face & hands, thickness of the lines, darkness of the glaze.....not so good when compared to the Kangxi example sold at Christie's. In my experience, the 19th c. revival examples are also better rendered than your example, too.
So, coupled with the odd foot ring, I think there is one other possibility. If the piece is 19th c., perhaps it is a French Samson or another European maker copying the Chinese style.
So, I just did a quick Google and found this Samson urn with a very similar bronze mount as your brush pot. The urn is much larger, so there is a bronze support, where your brush pot is smaller, it would not need one. Samson is notorious for leaving their marks off, and sometimes sellers remove the marks to sell as Chinese made pieces. Take a look.. (yours is on the left / Samson on the right)
Hi thank you for opinion , i actualy have two pieces of Samson a large planter and a Garden Stool one with a hunting scene not in the style of Kangxi If Samson did a pice they made shure there whas almost no empty space left they would fill that piece of porcelain with all kind o figures birds flowers , the brush pot has a lot of empty space , true that the ormolu looks alike well at least it is the only part of this brush-pot thats 100 percent European.
The samples above are Samson imitating Kangxi.
best regards Martin
Dear John,
besides some issues with the painting style etc., please ask yourself: what is doing that guy seated on the roof? Find a Kangxi item with that; is it possible?
Or that lady seated on that type of rock? With the other lady near her, that has nothing to do each other, like if she were a tree?
Kangxi decorators was painting normal scenes, generally with a meaning. They were not in need to “invent” something odd or unusual with the scope of attracting unexpert buyers. Actually, it is a scope only in the mind of the faker, while indeed it is just there where he is (luckily) failing most of the times.
Regards,
Giovanni
Sorry I dont wanna bring this up again ...but i found some new Pictures explaining the scene shown on my Brushpot with ormolu fittings.
I still beive it pictures a famous scene in a dramatic play from the 13th century "the Romance of the western chamber"
first i made a flat out scan of the image shown on my pot with a scanner. picture below
Next is an old painting shown on the wikipage about the play"romance of the western chamber"
next a pair of plates and a modern book i found images online searching "Romance of the western chamber"
and last a screensht from a online documentary about the shipwrek Ca Mau ... that one i found by pure luck
i think this is proof of what the scene is
best regards to all martin
Dear Martin,
sorry I have not been active in the last times, very busy with lot of things.
I see that the discussion has been evolved. You found good references for the motif, thank you; I didn’t know that, Chinese literature is not my forte😊. So I have been wrong there.
You could be right about the foot, of having been filed to match the bronze base, it is well possible.
Nevertheless, looking again carefully at the pictures, I keep my opinion that the brushpot is not Kangxi.
At its best, it could be a late 19th century copy. The figures are stiff compared to the Kangxi ones, as also noted by Greeno.
Regards,
Giovanni
@clayandbrush Dear Giovanni i am also not shure about the Brushpot beeing Kangxi
i have compare it with many samples i found online . The Quality is just not there.
i will submit pictures to Peter next week let see what his immo is . I keep you updated.
Best regards Martin
PS. I very much enjoy the detective work on this Piece !
Dear Martin,
Yesterday, while I was writing my last post, I have been tempted to just say that I was sorry for my first negative comment, but at least that has pushed you to make a lot of search, which is always highly instructive.
Regards,
Giovanni
