@shinigami dear birgit i did a update on this posting i thought you migth be interested cheers martin
Hi Martin, I’m the wrong person to judge that kind of thing, my field being rather Republic and later. However the bottom looks a bit strange to me. The foot rim is not at the outer rim but a bit more to the middle, almost as if the item was intended to be mounted from the beginning. That’s strange because the mounts were usually added in Europe and were not planned by the Chinese potters.
Birgit
Very odd base imo. I am with Birgit on this. I have never seen one like that before.
Mark
@weboy
Hi Martin -
Not really my area but concur with Giovanni’s comments on the painting style, also Birgit’s and Marks thoughts on the base - which is totally wrong ...
Very far from Kangxi ...
Stuart
Hi Martin,
Firstly I am not an expert on Kangxi or later revival pieces. I have on the past made errors!
It's my belief that the footing is very different from the one cited at RM auctions. The edge of yours has been made to fit the setting. Not the other way round. Also the RM one is flat. Yours appears to be indented.
I have posted both here for closer examination and discussion.
Mark
I agree, it should be flat; yours Martin, looks as though it has a foot rim as well the pi base and I am not sure that is correct, it looks odd. I think this type of base reappears on some 20th c pieces, but again, I have not seen it done that way.
I get the feeling that Mark is correct, this looks made to be mounted and that wouldn't be the case with a Kangxi brush pot, especially not with those mounts which look later 20th c. Will that area where the base mount was, chip off? It looks rather like extra clay, or are those brown patches glue residue?
I am wondering if this might be another tourist item. If it were meant to deceive, wouldn't the all round quality be better?
Strange having all those letters in the base, too. Wonder what that is about.
Julia, you have a good eye. I hadn’t noticed the letters. Maybe some measuring for the mounting?
Birgit
I got convinced that may be 19th century, but if we think about those letters... :S I would be very apprehensive
but the painting mimics very well the one at RM, no?
intriguing
Sorry that i am still on this but i think i have new evidence or a new theorie
I made some photos of the foot ..and add my opinions to it, i still wanna compare it to the foot in the RM auction see 1. picture bc there we know its a genuine kangxi piece.
bc of the angle this whas photographed one is unable to tell if this is concave ....it should be because otherwise it will not stand stabil
The round edge is all glaced and smoth .
Now the foot on my piece .... the foot is concave see picture.
The the round edge is not glaced animore ..my guess it whas sanded of to fit the shape of the ormolou mounting.
This must have been made on a pristine pot because
if the potter would have made the Foots-edge to fit the Mounting it would still be glaced. see picture
this pot migth have had once the same profile like the one in RM auction but whas sanded down to fit the ormolou
mounting .
what you think?
@julia absolutly i agree !... Its made for a pot with 10cm diameter
But the inner shape of the ormolou where it touches the Foot of the pot that is a diffrent story how else can you explain the sanded of parts on the pot.
I have another piece there same story the footrim had been partly sanded of to fit the ormolou.
I will go to a friend she has genuine brush pots wich i can compare with mine i guess it will show whats real.
thank you for youre answer Julia
best regards Martin
Good luck, Martin, hope your friend can be useful. At least she will be able to handle your item which always helps.
I have nothing to offer regarding the age of this brush pot but I would like to share some images illustrating the wide variety of Kangxi brush pot foot rims from the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing.
