I don't think it's early 20th century. But later. Perhaps 60's.

However, I have a bad track record with dating snuff bottles. 🤣

Perhaps if Giovanni pops in with his thoughts.

I have seen a million molded resin "cinnabar" snuff bottles.   As Mark says, the bubbles and the seam line are a dead giveaway; also, it is clear that it wasn't carved--the lines are too wavy.  I hope some day to fid the real thing!

The cased glass example is also quite common; I agree with Birgit that it is probably late 20th century--I  know I purchased several at that time.  I don't know if anyone molds cased glass--it would be difficult to get the colored glass in the right locations.  I think it is always carved.

I’ve studied the cinnabar snuff bottle. It’s a great piece to know what a fake piece is why I say fake and not copy is this was made to deceive they took the time to sand the mold seems chip it up and age the brass. All for a snuff bottle

Here is the late of the snuff bottle lot. I didn’t even know they had wood snuff bottles. Hoping this one is real and not another copy.

I have no idea about this one, but I seem to remember Giovanni talking about the importance of what the insides look like and also the stopper, whether the original material and the spoon are there. Possibly a photo of the base, too.

What is the animal and are those rings at the sides on the handles like you see on vases - maybe not, I can only see one?

Dear all, again, just found this discussion for lack of updating of the posts.

Yes, as said by others, different colors of lacquer exist, like yellow, green, black.

Real cinnabar red bottles are rare. When one has seen a real one, those fake bottles are clearly spotted.

The inside painted bottle with yellow overlay is carved, not molded. All these bottles are carved and mass produced, it is the kind of bottles made for the tourist market. Although hand made, not really the type of bottles worth to be collected.

About the wood one: always stay away from bottles with fancy shapes. Real snuff bottles were intended to be handled, so they must feel pleasant to handle. Bottles with fancy shapes are meant to attract not experienced buyers.

Regards,

Giovanni

So I have a question are all cinnabar pieces rare or just the snuff bottles. And do some fakes have the laying explained but Tim?

I am not expert on laquers, but no doubt, fake lacquers are not layered.

@lotusblack Speaking on the subject of Chinese cinnabar lacquer, ALL Qing and earlier periods were applied in layers, so under magnification, you will se layers.

Modern cinnabar, and Japanese cinnabar (from 19th c to now) was applied a single thick layer, then carved. So while it won’t have layers, you will see signs of carving (knife marks/tooling).

Resin fakes can be made to copy tool marks, age cracks, and I suspect can show some degree of fake layering if the cast is sophisticated.

Fakes were once easy to spot because they had casting bubbles, but the fakers have gotten more sophisticated and often remove the bubbles and/or use better casting methods.

The best way to recognize genuine cinnabar is to handle a genuine piece and study its qualities.

You should find that genuine cinnabar is light in weight when compared to resin of the same size.

The texture of genuine cinnabar is not plastic like, but more like painted wood.

Creating cinnabar objects was extremely time consuming, so the details should be carefully carved… sharp straight lines suggests at the very least inferior quality, but more likely a modern fake.

Finding genuine cinnabar is much harder to do than porcelain.

My buying habits are fairly well known (I buy a lot).  In 12 years I’ve only bought 10 or less pieces of genuine cinnabar, 2 of which were 1979’s pieces, but of exceptional quality.

Late 19th c / early 20th c cinnabar is dark in color (almost maroon), usually poorly carved, and made over brass, paper, or un-kilned wood.. all of which lends to severe cracking… so there is almost no interest among collectors for this product.

Early pieces of cinnabar are extremely rare… if you find a genuine piece, you’re almost assured it will be accepted at a major auction house.

@greeno107 thanks Tim so if the Cinnabar is authentic 19th century but applied to a brass container like a lidded box I still should not by due to the possibility of damage is that correct on but if it is on lacquer it ok correct?

@lotusblack I have never seen a genuine 19thc cinnabar lacquer box with a brass core, so I would advise you that the box is probably more modern than being described.

As to buying it… if you like it and the price is right, buy it.

But, if you’re looking for cinnabar that will appeal to collectors and appreciate in value…don’t buy.

@greeno107 I saw a cinnabar lidded box that had the same body as cloisonné is applied too. I’m not sure if it was brass or copper but metal core for sure.

This one sold at Artvisory gallery in Melbourne Australia last week for $1400 plus BP. Not expensive imo. I actually left a bid of $1000. Nice example.

It was listed as 19th century.
