So what are tips for spotting old cinnabar snuff bottles and why are some orange looking than red?
Here is my example
Genuine cinnabar snuff bottles are quite rare….most you find are resin copies (like the one in your photo).
Cinnabar lacquer is composed of dozens of layers of lacquer which is then carved.
You should see crisp elegantly carved lines, and under a loop, you should see layers of lacquer.
When you see seams/joinery, pit holes, and uneven design indicates resin.
If your still unsure then a test with acetone/nail polish remover should be the nail in the coffin. Using a cotton ball ear cleaner dab said into acetone and gently rub on the surface of the item. If the cooton bud turns red it's cinnabar. If not it's plastic/resin.
Some resin are difficult to determine. Especially those made in the early 50's.
Your as indicated by greeno107 is 100% resin and from the later 20th century. Typical tourist type ware.

Thanks guys looking for pointers since I see these a lot. I only pay a few bucks so maybe I’ll get lucky. I bought 3 snuff bottles I will post the other two maybe one will pan out.
@greeno107 I figured this was resin due to the orange look The ones I’ve seen in auction houses are usually cherry red smooth rounded edges. Are they carving these resin pieces?
@lotusblack Not that aware of, but perhaps the casting is getting better, so not always so obvious to tell without careful inspection.
I am not 100% sure but the early ones from the 1950's could have been hand-carved. Arts and crafts departments used to make some astonishing replicas early on. Including jades etc etc.
Certainly after that period they became cast. More in line with tourists items.
I think Peter has mentioned this a couple of times. Very high quality. But I have never seen one.

cinnabar does come in different colors so don’t go by red only. John
I think so, too. She reminds me a bit of Betty Boop. 😊 I was trying to find a similar example but only came up with one loosely described as second half 20th c. I think it may have been a bit older than this.
Thanks guys I have been told this snuff bottle is Peking early 20th they told me the yellow is overlaid glass the mask are carved. modern are molded. I did find an example it said same but IDK.
What is IDK?
I saw a Peking glass one on my earlier search and thought that this was what the style was copying. The yellow looks to have peeled off in places. I think this is just a copy.
