@lotusblack I like the scenes on your cinnabar, is it on wood or metal? The blackened base is confusing me, looks like it might be wood but the rim looks like it might be metal. It looks to have age. I remember Mark telling me to immediately wash the area of the acetone test to prevent spotting. When I did it, the q-tip came away looking like a bit of iodine. Sharon
@lotusblack Thanks for finding the video, so those on wood base are old layered sumac sap.
@johnshoe I know the hot pin test for ivory but I'm not sure how it works for cinnabar, since tree sap burns, i.e. frankincense and amber, would the pin tip not penetrate cinnabar as well as resin? There is a reason to give poison sumac a wide berth on your next hiking expedition through the Adirondacks. Pick up some Adirondack chairs while you're there.
@lotusblack I would hazard a guess that the vase form would be turned on a lathe and hollowed out and then the layers of cinnabar would be as applied to the form? A very painstaking and laborious process, then you have to hope the carver does not make a mistake. Sharon
@sharonp another thing I found interesting about the video he mentioned up to 250 layers so I’m understanding that the thicker the cut the more layers were added which mean more time. Almost like a Rug with knots the more Knots the more time. And we all know time is money.
@sharonp Your explaination of how cinnabar is formed over a wood core is correct. I'll just add that the wood cores were then kiln dried very carefully in the Ming dynasty. Any warping or shrinking would crack the lacquer. This is the very reason why Ming pieces are often in great shape...hardly any shrinkage of the wood, while 19th/early 20th pieces are often cracked with lacquer loss.
Totally fascinated by this form of art. We in the states can’t find anyone to work right now. And these artist had to make prices of art with toxic chemicals. Their passion was astounding.
