the first photo of the base with the red letter , and the red underside of the lid, is not on the ebay listing I checked. Probably it's another jar the seller had and he confused the photos, and then he removed the photo.

Hi Tam. The red 'S' is a Sampson mark. It can be seen on the base of the vase when it was purchased on the saleroom, click the 2nd link in thegoldentoad's post. The buyer has scratched the red "S" away from the base and listed it on ebay as a Chinese vase. J
Ok sorry , I must have clicked the image in the saleroom link and been taken to the wrong lot. I get it now.
I recognise the name of this ebay seller, jayoemms, and thought he or she was reliable - this is plain deception , but I suppose there is no way to call him/her out for it .

Very good observation, James! A Samson manufacture also explains the strange red lid and the general look of the vase which is rather pseudo-Chinese. I ask myself if he couldn't have got more for a nice and true Samson piece than for a dubious Chinese vase.

He got £311 for the piece. Unbelievable I mean just shocking to my boots. And I complain on a 40$ dish which is 150 years old. I'll have to shut up.
Dear Forum members,
If you weren't aware of it already, this eBay dealer, going under the name of jayoemms (Jonathan O'Marah, I think his real name is), is something of a TV personality in the UK. I stumbled across the connection between him and jayoemms purely by accident when I bought a couple of items from him myself some while ago. They were authentic, but as we are now full well aware, some dealers are not beyond mixing authentic and fake items in their listings.
There's an antiques show on television in the UK called Dickinson's Real Deal in which members of the public come in to see a group of dealers and they bring items in for the dealers to make them an offer on. Either they accept the deal offered or, if not, their items are taken to auction to see what sort of result they get there instead.

I too had thought that the man was reliable, but it now seems on the basis of this exposé of yet another adulterated Samson piece that he's not.
