Here is a vase you want to avoid..in my opinion, its a total fake. The colour,, glaze, and foot all point to a modern piece. Study it..
be safe out there, Peter
Peter
Hi Peter,
I agree. It doesn't look quite right, the enamels are weak. I think you mistyped the description as the mark is Jiaqing not Daoguang, as I'm sure you know
The blue part looks like faked orange peel - and: never trust a dirty footrim.
Birgit
Thanks for pointing out my error...in a bit of a hurry today with one thing or another. I should have been a little more careful. ! I fixed it..
best and thanks, Peter

Greetings to all members of this site, and to you, Peter, for having set it up. We're in your debt for it, and for all the other sterling work you're doing. I might just say that your weekly video review of eBay activity has become as much a must-do habit for me as is the quantity of tea I routinely drink (I'm British, we tend to do that!).
Now to the vase. Unquestionably, for a host of reasons, it is not Jiaqing mark and period. But one word of moderation, if I may - the seller has not made any outrageous and unsupportable claims for it. Unless I have missed something in his listing, the vase is simply described by him as a famille rose vase with mark. Unfortunately, it is the bidders who are misleading themselves here.
They'd benefit hugely on a number of fronts from becoming members of this Forum!
All good wishes,
Alan

Hello peter
This is part of the problem with eBay, the seller is not posting as new or old or of the 17th century
mark shows be in that where eBay needs to stepup. When I go on eBay to lookup antique I will go two century I'm look for theses unknown and ? Mark peace show up that lets seller off hook if they change the rules where the sellers would have to post in new or unknown and out of antique period and put more burden of proof on sellers or give your money back refund and after five to ten day it your problem.
hello there
new member here love the forum, I'm learning everyday from it.
Now I'm no expert but I noticed the vase in question is like this vase that sold at bonhams
https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20024/lot/81/
Learning247, nice comparison. My thoughts as a learner
Ebay vase, the rose (pink) seems a bit washed out and pale, Bonhams the colour is vibrant and pops out.
Just comparing the flower motifs on the body, compared to the Bonhams vase the ebay vase looks amateurish and kind of just blobbed. The mushrooms looking detail on top of the flower is highly detailed on the Bonhams vase, the enameller took his time compared to the ebay vase wich to my eye looks to rushed. This same thought on my part goes for most of the details
I must admit though the mark is almost indistinguishable between the two.
for those in the know, am I on the right track?
thanks
Ron
Dear Ron,
Yes, you're 100% on the right track. Don't worry too much about the similarity between both vases in the way the reign mark has been done, as these can be more easily replicated than the enamelling can. Here, as you've quite rightly noted, the eBay vase falls down badly. Its enamelling is flat, weak, and showing clear signs of having been rapidly applied, in contrast to the vibrancy and care of the enamelling on the Bonhams vase.
Regards,
Alan
Exactly, always look at the mark last, determine if a piece is old based on the work and details. Marks tend to impede the thinking process sometimes and can easily be done accurately. That said, they often contain errors as well regarding the number of strokes and placement etc.
Best Peter
Peter
Hello Peter
regarding the mark I noticed the mark on the ebay vase is different to the bonhams one
but both are jiaqing mark, is that correct?
The ebay vase is like the jiaqing mark top left in red and the bonhams vase mark is the same mark as the bottom right blue mark
Just for comparison
the bonhams vase mark
and the ebay vase mark
Learning247, I noticed the backwards character in the lower left corner. Interesting that they would both be correct.
Playing the devils advocate, is it at all possible that if every things else is correct ( although that’s not the case) the ebay vase could is just a poorer executed version and still be period correct. Or would the superior detail of the Bonhams vase be the normal standard of the period?
