Hi all,
has anyone else encountered this seller or others similar? They claim to be selling on behalf of a charity, in this case a charity for Chinese elders in Doncaster, UK. This seller sometimes has seemingly good things, but quite a bit of it is damaged. That may well be because the items are donated by Chinese families that want to support the charity?
The item descriptions are usually very detailed, describing why the item is what they say it is. The seller also accepts returns.
So it all seems completely legit and eminently worthy, but I just can’t shake the feeling that it’s TOO good!
What are your thoughts?
Nic

NicDan, I can not profess to being an expert but I don’t think this is a Ming bowle but maybe a transitional bowle. My thoughts are, the paste is to fine for Ming, the decoration although well done and pleasing doesn’t strike me as Ming, a to bit busy.
One other thing, I see absolutely no dirt or signs of shelf ware on the base, were has it been standing for 400 years plus? I stand undecided, Kangxi or brand new?
i look forward to the replies from the smart folks.
Ron
Hi Ron,
Thanks for your impressions of this. The clincher is ‘Kangxi or brand new’ and, therefore, is this seller all that he/she seems?
I look forward to hearing the smart folks’ thoughts too!
Nic
Had a quick look at some of the items on offer here from the 57 pages. There are a lot on offer here, which should raise an eyebrow or two.
While I cannot comment on the porcelain in general on offer here I can with the jade.
The listings for the qing period boulder/mountain weighing @ 1782 grams is post 1950. The carving is terrible and carved hastily.
All the jade I looked at (4 or 5 I believe) were all modern. Terrible carving and even worse was the quality of the jade itself.
The descriptions were laughable and fanciful!
Sorry can't post pictures as I am still using a mobile phone.

I would say this bowl is a brand new copy , and very badly done , imo, in terms of the blue tone , the decoration and the quality of the porcelain and potting ...why would they be selling a ming bowl for £79 ?
All their other chinese porcelain items looks cheap and new , except maybe the blue and white export , but the tea bowl has a hairline and the scalloped bowl a firing crack and is missing the lid (but not a bad price)
tam
Thanks Mark and Tam!
I guess it’s what I supsected. I had been curious for some weeks so I thought I’d bring it to the forum for conformation. I haven’t bought anything from this seller although I have been tempted!

Hi all,
do you know the annoying feeling when you have read something somewhere and don't find it again? I am almost sure I saw this pseudo Ming bowl before. There was a project a while ago when a Chinese professor or museum wanted to make bowls with the traditional methods. They even invented a design for them. The bowls were not meant to deceive. But of course some of them got into the antique market like this one. This is all I remember, someone might know more about it.
As to the Ebay seller: I guess they take what they are donated, which is not the first quality. They have someone who estimates the items for them, but he's not an expert, describing a 19th century fish plate as Ming and a 1970s jar as 19th century. These are just two random examples from page 1. The prices are too high for what the items are worth, that's why they have so many unsold items.

Ok, the smart folks have spoken, brand new it is. NicDan if I may be allowed to expand on your thread. A question, if this bowle was old, would it be an example of provincial Kangxi? For me the porcelain is what I would expect for Kangxi not Ming, the glaze has a bluish grey tinge I expect in Ming, the decoration though in my view a bit to busy for Ming but maybe transitional, the colour is far to strong for Ming but compares to the better quality cobalt of Kangxi I’ve seen posted. The nuances beyond the obvious still escape me I’m afraid.
Thanks
